Barbie Movie Australia Release Date, Cast, Plot & More

The new Barbie trailer is here, giving us a full licence to confirm that Greta Gerwig is, indeed, a genius.

The trailer finally gives us the first in-depth look at the plot of the film. Per the trailer, Barbie (played by Margot Robbie, of course!), is living it up in her Barbie Dream House with her pink convertible, with an eternally sunny life of beach fun and choreographed disco parties, until...

"Do you guys ever think about dying?"

And, with that, we have the crux of 2023's most anticipated film.

From the trailer, it seems Barbie is experiencing some 'changes', potentially leading her to an identity crisis.

The kicker comes when her feet—usually in an upright, tip-toed position—suddenly land flat on the floor; a new reality that has the other Barbies screaming in horror.

This leads Barbie to an 'oracle' character (Kate McKinnon) who tells her she needs to visit the real world. It's not long before the corporate big-wigs (lead by Will Ferrell) discover a doll has escaped Barbie Land, and they embark on a mission to return her.

There's so much to unpack! Barbie's hero journey? Barbie's fish-out-of-water story? Barbie's identity crisis? Barbie's escape from the corporate villains who control her? Needless to say, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have you covered for a thrilling ride.

Barbie will be released in Australia on July 20, 2023.

It will receive a full cinema release. It is not yet known which streaming service it will land on once it has received its full cinematic due.

As the main trailer shows, Barbie finds herself in the grips of a cruel identity crisis. She must leave her home town of Barbie Land and visit the 'Real World' to find the source and cure for her troubles. Meanwhile, Barbie also has to escape the clutches of the corporate villains who want to return her to Barbie Land before she learns too much.

In addition to Margot Robbie as the OG Barbie, there is a full line-up of other 'Barbies' in Barbie land. These include:

• Kate McKinnon (the oracle Barbie, who has appeared to have received a few, erm, touch-ups in the real world)Dua Lipa (a mermaid Barbie, apparently)

There are also a range of Kens, including Ryan Gosling as our main Ken and Shang Chi himself, Simu Liu.

In the real world, we have our key villain played by Will Ferrell, as well as other 'normals' Helen Mirren and America Ferrera.

We've also been treated to details about the Barbie soundtrack—including the title track by none other than Dua Lipa.

Dua Lipa's theme song for Barbie, which features in the main trailer, is a dance-friendly disco track called Dance The Night.

The track is now available wherever you listen to music—and we also have a music video!

In the video, Dua sports a number of sparkly nightclub looks, which appear to all be from her latest collaboration with Versace.

Other musicians on the soundtrack include Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike (who you may remember from Euphoria), Haim, Fifty Fifty, Gayle, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khalid, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, and Pink Pantheress.

Giving us a boost of national pride, there are TWO Aussie acts on the soundtrack: Tame Impala and The Kid Laroi.

Interestingly, the soundtrack listing also features Ryan Gosling. The actor has previously shared his pipes in the musical La La Land, will he get a full solo number in Barbie?
