Ghassan Amoun dies after being shot in 'targeted attack' in South Wentworthville

Ghassan Amoun dies after being shot in targeted attack in South Wentworthville
Ghassan Amoun, the brother of notorious gang leader Bassam Hamzy, is shot dead in Western Sydney in what police say is a "targeted attack" with "obvious connections to criminal networks".

The brother of notorious gang leader Bassam Hamzy has been shot dead in Western Sydney in a "targeted" attack.

Key points:
  • Ghassan Amoun had only recently been released from prison
  • A burnt-out car found nearby is believed to be linked to today's shooting
  • Mr Amoun's brother is the founder of the Brothers 4 Life gang

Investigative sources say Ghassan Amoun was shot multiple times in South Wentworthville about 1pm today.

A burnt-out car was found nearby and is believed to be linked to the attack.

Police say emergency services were called to Rawson Road at the intersection with the Great Western Highway.

Paramedics found a 35-year-old man with gunshot wounds in a car on the street, but he died at the scene.

The ABC understands he was shot in the head.

Superintendent Glenn Fitzgerald said the shooting was "quite obviously targeted" with "obvious connections to criminal networks".

"This is a very brutal attack that happened during the daylight hours in Sydney," Superintendent Fitzgerald said.

"This type of behaviour has been seen for a while and it will come to an end very soon."

Superintendent Fitzgerald said Mr Amoun was shot as he approached the car.

He said said two people — the shooter and a driver — were involved.

Mr Hamzy's lawyer said Mr Amoun had been warned by police he was under threat but was "nonchalant".

The death of Ghassan Amoun follows the fatal shootings of his brother Mejid Hamzy at Condell Park in 2020 and cousin Bilal Hamzy outside a Japanese restaurant in Sydney’s CBD last year.

The Hamzy and Alameddine families have been involved in an escalating gang war, although there is no suggestion that the Alameddine family was involved in today's shooting.

Bassam Hamzy founded the Brothers 4 Life gang from his jail cell in 2007.

He was first jailed in 1999 for 21 years, aged 19, over the murder of teenager Kris Toumazis who was shot dead outside a Sydney nightclub.

He has since been handed further lengthy jail sentences for drug supplies and other crimes.

Ghassan Amoun was arrested last year by Strike Force Raptor officers at a home in Auburn after he was allegedly found to be in breach of a Serious Crime Prevention Order (SCPO).

His lawyer, Entunc Ozen SC, told a court at the time that Mr Amoun "publicly disavowed" any affiliation with his brother.

He was jailed last year for breaching that SCPO and had only been recently released.
