Bella Thorne Slammed (Again) For Claiming to Be First on OnlyFans
People on Twitter are mad at Bella Thorne once again, this time for claiming she was the “first” to use OnlyFans and isthe reason its popular now. Thorne, 23, joined in August, and caused a stir back then due to others accusing her of scamming her customers.
In an Instagram Stories post from over the weekend, Thorne posted a selfie with the caption, “Everyone jumping on OnlyFans but I took the hit for doing it firsttttt coooool.” Presumably, she meant she was the first celebrity to join the site, but that’s not even true. Others like Shea Coulee and Cardi B were on the platform before she was. It's also important to note that Saturday Night Live did a skit about the platform in February 2019, and the New York Times did an investigation that same month. Sex workers have long been on the platform though, and we did our first in-depth investigation back in October 2018.
When Beyonce mentioned OnlyFans in a song in April 2020, there was a massive spike in its usage.
Thorne, a former Disney star, continued, saying that “legit everyone in my newsfeed following in my footsteps. But when I was getting heat y’all were scared. This keeps happening to me hahahah.”
When Thorne first joined OnlyFans, she earned $1 million on her first day, breaking records for highest earnings on the site. She also made it clear that she was going to do no nudity on her account.
Both customers and sex workers on the platform quickly turned on Thorne after she seemingly offered nudes for $200 that turned out to not be the kind of nudes usually sold on the site. After seeing the photo, her customers started demanding chargebacks en masse.
In the days to follow OnlyFans changed the way they do their business, hoping to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. They put in new guidelines limiting payouts for creators, putting a $50 limit on upcharges per post, maxing out tipping at $100, and making the payout a 30 day process. Many attributed this to Thorne's actions but the site has said the two were not related.
Sex workers on the site who were negatively impacted, as well as internet users who respect the work those sex workers do, immediately took to social media to call Thorne out, something that is happening again now.
