For 19 seasons Tom Brady defined the Patriots. Cam Newton could change everything
It has been 10 months since Newton last played a game due to a broken bone in his foot, but at his best the 2015 MVP could bring something to the table the Patriots traditionally have not had in offence.
Over the past 42 years, Patriots quarterbacks have ran for 4,833 yards (4419m). Across Newton’s nine-year career he has ran for 4,806 yards (4394m).

Tom Brady, the man Newton is replacing, ran 1037 yards over the 19 years he was the Patriots’ starting QB.
Of course, just because Newton can run the ball does not mean he will be asked to by Bill Belichick, but the coach’s comments from 2017 do suggest he is a fan of how the 31-year-old plays his game.
“I think when you’re talking about mobile quarterbacks, guys that are tough to handle, tackle, can throw, run, make good decisions — I mean, I would put Newton at the top of the list,” he said in 2017
Newton struggled with a shoulder injury throughout 2018 before suffering a broken foot in 2019 and only featuring twice as the foot healed slower than expected.
He was released by the Carolina Panthers in March this year.
