Challenge it, or go away: Smith put in his place by NRL referee

If Cameron Smith has influence over NRL referees, Ashley Klein certainly isn’t one of them.

The senior official had no time for any Smith backchat during Friday’s clash between Melbourne and Penrith at Campbelltown.

It was late in the first half when Smith was penalised by Klein for moving off his defensive line to block a Panthers runner who was chasing through a grubber.

As soon as the penalty was blown the Storm captain was straight over to the referee, who wouldn’t hear a word from Smith.

Round 6

“Cameron you changed your line and taken out the chaser coming through,” Klein ruled.

Smith then approached Klein trying to argue the fact, to which the official replied “do you want to challenge it?”.

When Smith kept arguing Klein repeated, “I’ve ruled it, do you want to challenge it?”.

Smith then laughed and walked off without saying another word, choosing not to use his captain’s challenge in that instance.

“Isn’t that the perfect antidote to a player complaining, is to say ‘will you challenge it?’,” Fox League commentator Dan Ginnane said.

Smith’s former teammate Cooper Cronk laughed that Klein “talked Smith out it” and said Smith is normally the one intimidating to get his own way.

During the week Smith had been accused by The Daily Telegraph of influencing referees on the field.

Maybe Klein read that report an chose to put an end to it.
