RB Leipzig vs. Rangers result: Europa League semi-final first leg edged by hosts as Angelino volley gives Red Bull wings

Rangers proved difficult opponents for RB Leipzig in the Europa League semi final, but in the end the German side managed a 1-0 win. An Angelino volley five minutes from time was enough to ensure that Red Bull head to Ibrox with a one goal lead to defend.

Rangers travelled to RB Leipzig as underdogs in their Europa League semi-final first leg, and can be proud of their performance despite a 1-0 loss.

The reigning Scottish champions went into the game with the aim of making sure they were still in the tie for the second leg, and they managed that.

Rangers set up with a back-three, John Lundstram playing as the central centre-back. Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side were second-best throughout the first half, having to defend bravely, and did so.

Rangers struggled to hold onto the ball, and didn't offer much threat of their own beyond a couple of counter-attacks, but they won't have been too disappointed during half-time. For all of the home team's possession, Leipzig didn't create too many chances.

There were a couple of tweaks for the second half, which helped Rangers grow into the game. Joe Aribo was pushed further forward, with Ryan Kent and Scott Wright taking up wider positions in a 5-4-1, and the change worked. Aribo held the ball up well and linked play, and his presence made it much easier for Rangers to get the ball up the pitch.

James Tavernier got forward more frequently from wing-back, and Rangers offered much more threat, but Leipzig still had plenty of chances, with star man Christopher Nkunku blasting off target when he had an open goal to aim at.

It looked like that would be the chance to win, before Angelino scored a beautiful goal with five minutes left on the clock. A corner from the right was headed clear to the edge of the area. Angelino got to the ball before Kent, and hit it first time as it dropped out of the air. His volleyed shot dipped and moved as it arrowed towards the far post, and Alan McGregor couldn't get down in time to meet it.

In truth, Leipzig deserved a goal from their efforts during the game. However, Rangers travel to Ibrox with just a one-goal deficit to overcome. With a full stadium behind them, and a more proactive approach than they had today, they will be confident of a magical night in Glasgow.

RB Leipzig vs. Rangers as-it-happened: updates and highlights

Full-time: It's a nervy finish, as Tavernier gives away a free-kick out wide, picking up a booking as he does so. There's a feeling of anticipation, but the ball is headed away, and the final whistle blows. Leipzig take a slight lead into the second leg.

85th min: GOAL!

RB Leipzig have their goal! They have a corner from the right wing. It's headed clear at the near post, to Angelino on the edge of the area. Kent isn't able to get across and put him off as he volleys towards goal, firing a dipping, moving shot just inside the far post. McGregor was never stopping that.

81st min: There's been a chance at either end, Nkunku tries to get his head on a cross beyond the far post, but the presence of Bassey seems to do enough to put him off. Sakala hasn't quite been on the same wavelength as some of his teammates so far, his hold up play has been lacking, compared to Aribo's when he was the central attacker.

78th min: He's out on the right, but Aribo is still making a nuisance of himself. The hosts haven't been quite as composed on the ball as they were in the first half, with Rangers pressing them more often now. They're only 15 minutes away from heading back to Ibrox with the tie at 0-0, and you wouldn't bet against them managing that.

74th min: Forsberg and Silva are on for Olmo and Szoboszlai for the home side. For Rangers, it looks like they're keeping their previous shape. Fashion Sakala is playing through the middle, with Aribo on the right.

72nd min: What a miss! Nkunku dances into the area, through the defence from the left hand side of the area. McGregor rushes out, making himself big, and Nkunku pushes the ball to his right once again. The goal is open, but Nkunku has pushed the ball too far wide the get his foot round it, and he slashes the ball off target. Moments earlier, Rangers have a 3 on 3 at the other end. Aribo's heavy touch forced him into passing left to Kent, and Klostermann stood his ground, dispossessing the attacker.

62nd min: Rangers have managed a spell of their own in response, and Aribo is involved in everything they do. He's showing for the ball well, and managing to link play when it gets up to him.

59th min: The hosts have stepped it up in the last few minutes. They're moving the ball quickly, and Rangers are just trying to keep the ball out of their penalty area at the moment.

54th min: Nkunku flashes the ball towards goal, from the edge of the area. It's a powerful, rising shot, but it's too close to McGregor, who palms it away. A reminder to Rangers of the threat their hosts carry.

53rd min: Goldson heads wide from a corner. Rangers are finding it easy to move up the pitch in this half, playing further forward as a focal point is definitely helping.

51st min: Rangers manage a good counter. It starts with Aribo holding up the ball well with his back to goal, and ends with Ryan Kent driving across goal from the left. It's wide of the far post. Tavernier was just a little too far to have reached it.

49' Ryan Kent inches away from the opening goal. A terrific counter-attack from Rangers.

Halftime: It's not been the most entertaining of first halves, but Rangers are halfway through the game, and still in the tie.

41st min: The first half has seen a lot of Red Bull possession so far, and the occasional shot as a result. Rangers haven't really imposed themselves on the tie at all.

36th min: Konrad Laimer has been impressive so far, the Leipzig man seems to be involved in everything. A Henrichs cross is fired across the face of goal, but Rangers get it clear.

32nd min: It's more last ditch defending from Rangers. Bassey gets caught in possession and the hosts break. Szoboszlai breaks down the right and, after a quick interchange, finds Angelino attacking the box on the far side. He lofts the ball into the wing backs path, and Angelino's volleyed shot towards goal is blocked.

28th min: Rangers have been second best, but they haven't had too many problems in their own area. They're won a free kick in the last few minutes. They haven't made the most of them, but set pieces could be important for them here.

23rd min: It's been better from Rangers in the last couple of minutes, but the home side are still having the better of the game. The visitors are managing to escape the press a little better.

19th min: Goldson does really well to break track Laimer, as he's played in behind the right side of the Rangers defence. He's keeps stride with him and slides in to block Laimer's shot.

17th min: Barisic tries to head away a cross from the right hand side, but he's caught under the ball and just flicks it on. It's passed back inside to Nkunku in the area. His first touch is a little loose, but he winds up for a shot, and Bassey needs to dive in to make a block.

13th min: RB Leipzig break down the right, but Laimer's cross is held by McGregor. Rangers are finding it a little difficult out of possession. Nkunku is playing more like a midfielder than a forward, and the Red Bull front three is interchanging positions regularly. When the hosts have the ball, Rangers have three defenders marking nobody at times, and the home team are able to overload the midfield or the wide areas.

9th min: It's been a fairly nervy start for Rangers. When they get the ball, they're not doing a job at holding onto it.

5th min: RB Leipzig have had the best of the start. A shot from distance in the opening minute followed by a penalty appeal. Goldson got a little too tight to Nkunku, who rolled him inside the area, and went down under pressure. The Leipzig players don't really appeal for it, but it's an early warning.

2nd min: It looks like a back five for Rangers to start. Lundstram is playing in the middle of the back five. Kent and Wright are the two up front, with Aribo supporting.
