Melbourne Victory have dumped two-time reigning FFA Cup champions Adelaide United out of the competition with a comeback 2-1 quarter-final win. Jake Brimmer was United's destroyer on Wednesday night, setting up Victory's second-half goals at Coopers Stadium. Craig Goodwin put the hosts on track for a fourth-straight semi-final appearance with a 33rd minute free kick which Victory gloveman Ivan Kelava could only palm into his own net. From almost the same patch of grass, Brimmer summoned a similarly sharp set piece, curling a peach to the back post where Josh Brillante equalised just after the hour mark. With 13 minutes remaining, Brimmer played in Francesco Margiotta who struck Jacob Tratt's outstretched hand, earning a penalty which the Italian converted. George Blackwood butchered a late chance, heading over from inside five metres deep into injury time. The defeat meant United suffered their first FFA Cup loss since the 2017 final, bringing to an end an unparalleled 12-match run in the competition. Tony Popovic's side join Central Coast in the last four, with the other semi-finalists yet to be determined. Melbourne City and Wellington Phoenix were deadlocked 0-0 after 90 minutes on Wednesday night, with Sydney FC and Brisbane Road to square off next week. The semi-final draw will take place on Thursday. Australian Associated Press
