Geelong's new youth hub opens Geelong Times

A NEW youth hub in Geelong is offering young people a place to connect, develop skills, and access support services.

The Nest, a purpose-built space for locals aged 12 to 25, opened last week, with minister for youth Natalie Suleyman, Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj, and Geelong MP Christine Couzens attending the official launch.

The hub provides programs focused on mental health, employment readiness, life skills, and social connection.

Couzens said the idea for the hub came directly from young people.

“Young people in Geelong came to me with a vision for a dedicated Youth Hub,” she said.

” I’m proud to stand with them and see The Nest delivered – ensuring that local young people have a safe space with the support and tools they need to thrive.”

Designed with input from young people, the facility includes an open-plan social area, a multipurpose room for music and arts, and a fully equipped kitchen for cooking classes.

The service will operate as a two-year pilot at the Busport complex on Gheringhap Street and Transit Place.

Suleyman said the hub was part of a broader effort to provide spaces for young people.

“The Nest is just one of several important spaces we are creating, giving young people a place they can feel at home, access support and engage in activities that promote their wellbeing.”

The Nest was named following community engagement led by the City of Greater Geelong, with the symbolism of a safe and nurturing space resonating with young locals.

Kontelj said the hub would provide an inclusive and welcoming environment.

“The Nest promises to be a fun, welcoming, and inclusive space for young people across Greater Geelong to relax, access essential services, and connect with peers.”

The project is funded through the Victorian government’s five-year Youth Strategy, ‘Our Promise, Your Future,’ with $1 million allocated for youth hubs in regional and outer metropolitan areas.
