Apple launches four new iPhones - all with 5G
Apple has today announced its 2020 range of iPhones, with four new phones launching in Australia in the coming month.
For the first time, Apple is releasing four new models in a range of features and sizes with the key feature of the announcement being 5G.
Touted as "a new era for iPhone" by Apple CEO Tim Cook, 5G offers super fast speeds in 5G areas, allowing for better quality streaming video, gaming and connectivity.
American Telco Verizon described the announcement saying "5G just got real", pointing to Apple's dominance and influence in the market, despite Samsung, Oppo and others having 5G phones in the market for over a year now.
Telstra's logo was shown on screen as one of the Global 5G networks which will be a boost for the big T as they push to exert their 5G dominance here.
In the past couple of years Apple has announced three models of the iPhone, in 2020 there will be four models: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The iPhone 12 Mini is a new addition, taking on a smaller form factor though with a 5.4-inch screen, appealing to those who prefer a smaller device, it's slightly smaller than the iPhone 7 or 8 people may be familiar with.
At the top end, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a staggering 6.7-inch screen, the largest iPhone screen ever.
Most important to the iPhone 12 is its new-look design.
Moving away from the rounded edges of the last six years, the new square design will be well received by fans of the Apple iPhone.
Additionally, all models come in a range of colours with the iPhone 12 in White, Black, Red, Blue and Green, while the Pro models come in Silver, Gold, Graphite and "Pacific Blue".
The Pro models consist of more premium materials such as stainless steel, while both feature a more durable glass display, with drop tests showing four-times better performance - ie: less likely to break - though they aren't immune from smashing.
On the back, the wireless charging module has been updated with magnets to allow for easier charging capabilities with snap-on chargers, as well as snap-on accessories, which will be a huge aftermarket for other manufacturers.
On the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini the rear camera is a dual-lens setup, featuring a standard and ultra-wide lens, with Night Mode now available on the ultrawide and front-facing cameras.
Apple's iPhone 12 Pro models also feature a Lidar sensor which will allow for improved Augmented Reality features and faster auto-focus.
Prices start at $1,199 go up to $2,369 for the most expensive and largest capacity iPhone 12 Pro Max.
iPhone 12 Mini - From $1,199
