Who is Lewis Capaldi's Someone You Loved actually about?
It was a big night for Lewis Capaldi at the Brit Awards last night as he picked up two of the biggest prizes of the night.
And he certainly made the most of his moment in the spotlight as he accepted the song of the year award for his smash hit Someone You Loved.
The chart-topper has been on Love Island viewers’ minds a fair bit lately after his ex-girlfriend Paige Turley – who is a contestant on the current series – claimed that Lewis had written the song about her.
And he addressed those claims on Tuesday night, denying that was the case.
So just who was the song written for?Who is Someone You Loved actually about?
Lewis explained in his acceptance speech that Someone You Loved is actually about his late grandmother – rather than Love Island’s Paige.
As he took to the stage to collect the song of the year award he explained: ‘Contrary to popular belief…a lot of people think this song is about my ex-girlfriend, who you can now see every night on Love Island.
‘But it’s actually about my grandmother who has sadly passed away a few years ago, and I hope to God ITV don’t contact her to be on a reality dating TV show.’
It’s not the first time the singer has revealed this however, having spoken about his gran being his inspiration for the song in an interview with V Music Australia.
‘The song is not about a lady who I was in a romantic relationship with, it’s about my grandmother, who is dead. F**k,’ he said.
‘She died a few years ago, your classic death, do you know what I mean? Not coming back sort of thing.
‘I went into a session with friends of mine called TMS and a guy called Romans and I was like: “I’ve got this but I can’t write another heartbreak ballad”
‘And as fortune had it, my gran had just died. As luck would have it, they said “Have you lost anybody?”, and I says “Just the ticket, my gran’s dead!”‘What did Paige Turley say about Someone You Loved?
Paige – who appeared as a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent when she was 14 – claimed at the start of the current series of Love Island that the song was written about her.
Speaking of her claim to fame she said: ‘Lewis Capaldi is my ex-boyfriend. We went out when we were younger, I was about 17 or 18.
‘We were together for about a year. It ended really amicably and we’re still pals.’
She added: ‘According to the papers, the song Someone You Loved was about me.’
Before she went into the villa she told The Sun: ‘It’s a great song. It’s relatable, and it would probably fit right in. That will be my walk-in song, probably.’
While Lewis might have cleared up any confusion over Someone You Loved, the fact the song isn’t about Paige doesn’t mean he hasn’t written any songs about her.
He recently admitted that Hold Me While You Wait was penned with Paige in mind, saying at an event on Saturday that the track is about a relationship that is ‘going well, and the lady has different ideas.’
Lewis explained: ‘She thinks it’s going horribly and then she leaves, and you’re quite sad about it, and you write an album about it.’
‘And then she ends up going on Love Island.’
Love Island continues on ITV2 tonight at 9pm.
