Lizzo weight loss: Singer responds to detox diet backlash after sharing smoothies on TikTok and Instagram
Lizzo has responded to fans and followers who have been unleashing on her online for promoting diet culture after she embarked on a 10-day smoothie detox.
The Grammy award-winning singer, who is big on promoting body positivity and self-love, posted videos of her diet progress to TikTok, including footage of her daily consumption regimen.
While on the diet, Lizzo said she made her way through three green smoothies and detox supplements, drank plenty of water and a superfood shake, and ate small snacks, including apples with peanut butter, a vegan protein bar and nuts and cucumbers in apple cider vinegar.
She also claimed she was “practising safe detox methods” with a nutritionist and warned others not to try it without research.
But since she first uploaded videos of her diet, the singer has copped a barrage of criticism.
“Never thought I would see the day where Lizzo promotes unhealthy “slimming” detoxes,” one disappointed fan said on TikTok.
“Please listen to your fans, we know you aim for transparency but this is not the kind of stuff you should be promoting,” another added.
At the end of the diet, the singer shared comparison photos of days one and ten and responded to the negative comments.
She also explained she did not do the diet in an effort to lose weight.
“So I did the 10-day smoothie detox and as you know I would normally be so afraid and ashamed to post things like this online because I feel, like a big girl, people just expect if you are doing something for health you are doing it for a dramatic weight loss,” she said in a video to Instagram.
“And that is not the case.
“In reality, November stressed me the f*** out, I drank a lot, I ate a lot of spicy things and things that f****d my stomach up and I wanted to reverse it and get back to where I was.
“My sleep has improved, my hydration, my inner peace, my mental stability, my f*****g body, my f*****g skin, the whites of my eyes.
“I’m a big girl who did a smoothie detox and I wanted to share that with you guys.
“I got exactly what I wanted out of it and every big girl should do whatever the f*** they want with their bodies.”‘Do life your way’
Lizzo later made several other posts promoting body positivity, encouraging people to “DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH YOUR BODY”.
“I detoxed my body and I’m still fat. I love my body and I’m still fat. I’m beautiful and I’m still fat. These things are not mutually exclusive,” she wrote.
“To the people who look to me, please do not starve yourselves. I did not starve myself.
“I fed myself greens and water and fruit and protein and sunlight. You don’t have to do that to be beautiful or healthy. That was my way. You can do life your way.”
Despite the negativity, plenty of fans and followers also showed support for the singer, praising her for her transparency.
