Singer FKA twigs sues ex-boyfriend Shia LaBeouf for alleged physical and emotional abuse
Transformers star Shia LaBeouf is being sued by his ex-girlfriend, British singer FKA Twigs, over his alleged physical and emotional abuse during their relationship.
FKA twigs — whose real name is Tahliah Barnett — dated the 34-year-old actor from 2018 and 2019 and said her experience with him was “the worst thing I’ve ever been through in the whole of my life”.
She said she wanted to bring awareness to “the tactics that abusers use to control you and take away your agency”.
In an interview with The New York Times Barnett, 32, recounted the harrowing abuse she claims she faced — including an alleged incident when LaBeouf was driving recklessly with Barnett in the passenger seat and threatened to crash the car unless she professed her love for him.
LaBeouf told the publication that “many of these allegations are not true” but he owed Barnett “the opportunity to air their statements publicly and (for me to) accept accountability for those things I have done”.
“I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behaviour made them feel,” he said.
“I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalisations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.”
Barnett also alleged LaBeouf once woke her up in the middle of the night by choking her.
When she begged to be let out of the car, she claims LeBeouf pulled over at a petrol station, assaulted her and threw her against the car before forcing her back in.
Barnett shared a screenshot of the article in an Instagram post and admitted came forward with her allegations to show how abusive relationships could affect anyone.
“I never thought something like this would happen to me. Which is why I have decided it’s important for me to talk about it and try to help people understand,” she wrote.
Another of LaBeouf’s former girlfriends, stylist Karolyn Pho, described similarly tumultuous experiences to the New York Times.
In one alleged incident, Pho said the actor drunkenly pinned her to a bed and headbutted her until she bled.
