Multiple people have been injured after a commercial flight crashed at an airport in Toronto, Canada, with the plane eventually coming to rest upside down.

The Delta Air Lines flight 4819 was travelling from Minneapolis, in the United States, on Monday afternoon, local time. It crashed while landing after 2pm.

In a statement, Delta said the Bombardier CRJ900 was being operated by its subsidiary, Endeavor Air, and had 80 people on board — 76 passengers and four crew.

The airline said only one plane was involved in the crash.

Pearson International is the busiest airport in Canada. It was closed after the crash, although it has since reopened.

Toronto has been pounded by snow over the past week sparking transport chaos, including at the airport, and strong wind gusts were reported at the time the plane was landing.

Canada's Transport Minister Anita Anand said she was "closely following the serious incident" in a statement on social media.

Pictures of the plane at the airport showed it flipped upside down, surrounded by snow, and also missing its tail and wings.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said all 80 people on board the Bombardier CRJ900 were evacuated.

Multiple people were injured in the crash, and Delta CEO Ed Bastian said the carrier was working to confirm more details.

"The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today's incident at Toronto-Pearson International Airport," he said.

"I want to express my thanks to the many Delta and Endeavor team members and the first responders on site."

Three helicopters and two ambulances were dispatched to the scene, according to local a local health authority, named Ornge, which said three people had been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

They are a child, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 40s.

In a statement, Delta said "initial reports" indicated 18 "customers" had been injured in the crash.

In a video posted to social media, someone claiming to be a passenger on the plane could be heard saying: "We just landed, our plane crashed. It's upside down. Most people appear to be OK."

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said it had dispatched a team to the area to investigate the crash.

"There is a plane crash. However, we don't know the circumstances surrounding it at this point," said Constable Sarah Patten of the Peel Regional Police in Ontario.

There have been multiple deadly plane crashes in North America in the past month.

On January 29, 67 people were killed when a military helicopter collided with an American Airlines passenger flight near Washington DC.

Two days later, at least seven people died when a medical transport plane crashed in Pennsylvania.
