Lion to shut West End brewery in Adelaide

Australia's second biggest beer company Lion, will permanently close the West End brewery in June next year, blaming falling beer consumption and the pandemic.

"Our input costs have continued to rise against this backdrop of declining volume, and a further drop in draught beer sales as a result of the pandemic".

About 40 people will remain employed by Lion in South Australia in sales and sponsorship roles.

"We acknowledge West End’s 160-year history. We are a proud supporter of sports at all levels - sponsoring many competitions and teams in SA including the SANFL, the Strikers and the Redbacks – and of the pubs and clubs that bring communities together''.

Lion is owned by Japanese giant Kirin Group. Lion makes brands including Tooheys and XXXX Gold in other breweries around Australia.

Its main rival Carlton & United Breweries, now owned by Japan's Asahi Group, is the market leader in Australia with brands including Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught.
