Key points:
  • The 21-year-old has been released on bail after being charged over the death of a seven-month-old girl
  • Police say the baby was found unresponsive at a Murgon home earlier this month
  • The matter will return to court in May

Lavinia Alison Murray, 21, appeared in the Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Friday over the death of the baby, which was found unresponsive at a Murgon home on February 5.

An occupant of the house attempted CPR on the girl who was rushed to hospital where she later died.

Police said Ms Murray was known to the baby but have not confirmed their relationship nor the cause of the infant's death.

Prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens opposed bail during the hearing, citing concerns over retribution from other community members.

Ms Murray has two children, aged four and one.

But Ms Murray's lawyer asked Magistrate Andrew Sinclair to consider her young age, lack of previous offending and strong family support along with the "tragic circumstances" of the matter.

They said Ms Murray had not intended to do any harm.

Magistrate Sinclair said he considered her risk of reoffending while on bail to be "very low".

"I don't perceive there to be a risk to either of her children," he said.

Family and friends packed the courthouse gallery for Ms Murray's appearance.

The matter will return to court on May 4.
