AFL round seven LIVE: Geelong v Collingwood

AFL round seven LIVE Geelong v Collingwood
Hasn't football got interesting? Leading Victorian clubs Geelong and Collingwood are going head-to-head in Perth.

I'll leave you with this as we call it a night - Josh Jenkins not all that happy with the free-kick count.

Signing off, Damien Ractliffe at The Age. Good night.

Chris Scott comments:

  • on his assessment of the match: "I just thought we were beaten by a better team on the night. They were much better than us early in the contest. We just couldn't manufacture a way back. They were very good; sometimes you get beaten by a better team on the night. De Goey was outstanding. Their midfielders were clearly on top of ours, Grundy had a good game."
  • on Brodie Grundy's impact: "I didn't think our ruckmen were disgraced but their collective around the midfield was better than ours.
  • on tonight's injuries: "Joel [Selwood] was a hamstring. I think speaking to him and the medical staff briefly, they're optimistic it's not too bad. Jordan Clark had a shoulder dislocation. That's not a great side but the variation between a minor shoulder dislocation and major is great. We're not sure where it is on the scale yet."
  • on the umpiring: "My assessment of the umpires? It's worth looking back on it; we've got the luxury of looking at the angles and making an assessment slowly. The umpires are like us [a bit rusty].
  • on whether Gary Ablett will be managed differently: "We've got a plan in place but it's always subject to change. I don't think Gary is that different to all our players in that we try to treat them all like individuals."

The great wall of Collingwood has claimed another victim, writes Daniel Cherny.

The Pies moved to second on the ladder on Thursday night, beating Geelong in front of more than 22,000 at Perth's Optus Stadium and restricting their opponents to fewer than 40 points for the fifth time in seven matches this season.

Buckley comments on:

  • the quality of the win: "It was a really strong effort over the full four quarters. Geelong have been as good as anyone around the ball.
  • on Jordan De Goey's performance: "Jordy was exceptional in that last quarter and he's a quality player. We benefited from him being up and about. We went in 46 times so when we're giving our forwards supply they can go to work."
  • on keeping De Goey forward: "We were looking for a little bit of legs in our midfield late in the game and we went to Jack Crisp because Jordy was looking so dangerous forward of the ball. But he and Jamie Elliott have given us that bite around clearance. Jordy is probably a frustrated midfielder and he'd like to be there ultimately. But when he's kicking five goals in a shortened game in a low-scoring year, we'll take that."
  • on leaving out Mason Cox: "It was a coin-toss decision. It was pretty slippery out there. We just thought the question mark was straightening us up and being able to go down the line to Mason or being able to hunt [the ground ball].
  • on how the Pies handle a 10-day break to their next game, against West Coast on Sunday week: "I think they've earned a bit of a rest and they might be few and far between given the rest of the season. Our pressure was through the roof in the second quarter. The boys were understandably gassed for periods of that second half. We'll freshen up physically. The difficulty will be mental stimulation."

This was the tap from Brodie Grundy to Jack Crisp, just second after Cam Guthrie cut the margin to 10 points.

Crisp launched the ball inside 50 to De Goey who marked and slotted his fourth to seal the win.

Would love your feedback. Which was better? Will Hoskin-Elliott's mark or Jordan De Goey's goal?

Two key injuries to Geelong has added salt to the wounds.

Captain Joel Selwood was out of the game in the first term with what looks like a hamstring. He told Channel 7 it felt like a cramp, but no risks were taken with the Cats great.

Meanwhile, Jordan Clark looks like he's dislocated his shoulder.

Hard to go past Jordan De Goey's five goals - certainly the difference tonight. He was the only multiple goal kicker on the night.

Adam Treloar finished with 34 disposals. He's the only player this season to log 30-plus disposals in three matches this season. And he's done it in the past three weeks, having missed the first four rounds.

Patrick Dangerfield (32) and Cam Guthrie (28) were among Geelong's best, while Scott Pendlebury (24), Taylor Adams (21), Jack Crisp (20) and Tom Phillips (20) were all busy.

Brodie Grundy had 46 hitouts to Darcy Fort's 23 and Esava Ratugolea's seven.

Well, this win sees Collingwood jump above Geelong on the ladder. The Pies have 18 points, while the Cats have 16.

The Pies have been brilliant defensively this season. Again tonight, they've kept Geelong to just 35.

They boast an enviable percentage but it will probably mean little at the end of the year due to the draw they had with Richmond in round two.

The Cats next face Fremantle and you could probably expect them to bounce back. The Pies have one more big challenge coming up: West Coast in Perth next week.

Jordan De Goey seals a brilliant night with his fifth goal, with just 22 seconds left.

It's been a stellar night from the enigmatic Pie.

Collingwood defeats Geelong: 8.9 (57) to 5.5 (35)
