Burton boots winner as Reynolds helps Dogs pull off ‘miracle’ win against Cowboys: 3 Big Hits

Bulldogs star Matt Burton has booted a field goal in golden point to seal an incredible 15-14 comeback win over the Cowboys on Sunday night.

The game went to extra time after Canterbury winger Josh Addo-Carr scored in the 80th minute and Burton’s sideline conversion to win the game hit the post.

But the duo then combined again in the 85th minute when Addo-Carr made a break down field to put Burton in position to kick the winner.

The second-biggest roar of the night, behind Burton’s winner, was when Bulldogs veteran Josh Reynolds entered the game in the 49th minute.

Reynolds played his first game for the Dogs since 2017, after the 33-year-old earned a surprise top 30 contract over the summer.

“There he is, Josh Reynolds is back in the NRL as a Bulldog once again,” Warren Smith said on Fox League.

Bulldogs utility Jayden Okunbor was reported and binned for an ugly hip-drop tackle on Cowboys captain Jason Taumalolo in the 14th minute.

Taumalolo was in immediate pain and left the field following the incident, but the star lock came back on 13 minutes later.

“That is a textbook definition hip-drop tackle,” Warren Smith said on Fox League.

North Queensland crossed first thanks to a chip and chase from star No. 6 Tom Dearden in the seventh minute.

Dearden spotted there was no fullback at home and kicked through from 20 metres out before regathering to score.

“Only needed a bounce and he gets one straight from room service, what a heads up play from Tom Dearden,” Warren Smith said.

Bulldogs backrower Raymond Faitala-Mariner went off inside three minutes following a head clash and failed his HIA.

Dearden then saved a try at the other end of the field when he got to a Bulldogs grubber first.

Valentine Holmes booted the Cowboys further ahead following Okunbor’s tackle.

Canterbury got on the board, despite being a man down, when Burton put a grubber through for Jacob Preston in the 19th minute.

Cowboys backrower Coen Hess looked to have scored a screamer after chasing down a grubber in the 33rd minute but fell millimetres short of planting down the ball.

North Queensland extended their lead when fullback Tom Chester ran a strong line to crash over in the 60th minute.

The Bulldogs hit back when Preston reached out to score his double in the 68th minute before Addo-Carr and Burton’s heroics at the death.

“The Bulldogs have pulled off a miracle. What a win by the Dogs,” Smith said.

Here are three of the biggest talking points out of the match.

ICEMAN BURTON STANDS TALL AND DELIVERS

The Bulldogs brought Matt Burton to Canterbury to deliver with the game on the line and he showed exactly why he’s on the big bucks on Sunday night.

Burton went within centimetres of winning it after the siren but his sideline conversation hit the post.

It mattered not though because Burton linked up with his Kangaroos teammate Josh Addo-Carr to win the game in golden point.

“Here is Matt Burton. He had the opportunity to kick the conversion in normal regulation but in the hardest part, he had the calm, the precision and the skill to kick a 40m field goal and win it for the Dogs,” Cooper Cronk said.

“If the Dogs were going to win it, it was always going to be Addo-Carr and Burton.

“Matt Burton with the golden left boot and absolutely comes out with a clutch play here to win it for the Dogs. Outstanding.

Controversial HIP DROP call sees sinbin! | 00:42

“With 10 seconds left on the clock, he sits back, puts it in the sweet spot and puts the ball over the black dot.

“Josh Addo Carr and Matt Burton, take a bow.”

Burton was estatic after the game and said he owed his teammates after missing the conversion.

“I’m over the moon,” Burton said on Fox League.

“It was tough at the end to miss that conversion from the sideline so I owed the boys one and just lucky enough to get that (field goal) away at the end there.”

SECOND-LOUDEST ROAR RESERVED FOR REYNOLDS

The second-biggest roar of the night came in the 49th minute when fan favourite Josh Reynolds came on for his first game in Bulldogs colours since 2017.

Reynolds, 33, earned a surprise top 30 contract over the summer after coming home following a two-year stint in the Super League.

“The Grub, there he is, Josh Reynolds is back in the NRL as a Bulldog once again,” Warren Smith said.

“I got thrown (by the crowd cheering), I thought it was a line break but it was Josh Reynolds warming up. The No. 14 is out there in the middle third of the field for the Dogs,” Cooper Cronk responded.

Reynolds played with plenty of energy and outside a poor defensive read just after coming on, he was solid making 21 tackles and two offloads.

He also delivered an all-time spray at referee Liam Kennedy after the Bulldogs were penalised in the 55th minute.

But Reynolds’ return was tempered by Jayden Okunbor likely facing a suspension, Max King looking disfigured after his poke in the eye, Franklin Pele nursing a suspected fractured forearm and Raymond Faitala-Mariner a major concern after a significant head-knock.

HIP-DROPS MAKING UGLY RETURN

Bulldogs utility Jayden Okunbor was binned for an ugly hip-drop tackle on Jason Taumalolo in the 14th minute.

Taumalolo was in immediate pain and left the field following the incident, but the star lock came back on 13 minutes later.

“That is a textbook definition hip-drop tackle,” Smith said.

“No surprises to see that be a yellow card given what we’ve seen so far with the crackdown of the hip drop this season. It’s a dangerous play.”

“I can’t argue with that as we want this out of our game,” Cronk said.

“The game wants to get rid of these tackles and falling on the back of the leg of a player who has pushed through the line is a no-no. It’s the right call,” Cronk.

The tackle came after Warriors backrower Marata Niukore and Sharks captain Dale Finucane were both binned for hip-drop tackles in the first game on Sunday.
