Everton 2-2 Liverpool: The hosts rescued a late draw with the last kick of an eventful final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park

Everton captain James Tarkowski equalised deep into stoppage time to earn them a 2-2 Premier League draw against Liverpool in a dramatic final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Liverpool extended their lead atop the league table to seven points over second-placed Arsenal with what had been their game in hand, while Everton climbed to 10 points above the drop zone in 15th.

And after 131 years of Goodison derbies, the draw was a fitting ending with the final tally totalling 41 wins apiece and 38 draws.

Liverpool looked poised for victory when Tarkowski struck in the 98th minute with a blistering shot into the top corner. Scores of fans piled onto the pitch before a lengthy VAR review ruled the goal was onside.

Goals, cards, and chaotic drama makes Goodison’s last Merseryside derby a thrilling finale

22:15 , Mike Jones

Goodison Park bade farewell to the derby with a reminder of the dangers of underestimating Evertonian defiance, an illustration of this game's enduring capacity for late drama.

“We won the league at Goodison Park,” chorused the Liverpool supporters, eyeing a nine-point lead at the Premier League summit, imagining Mohamed Salah had scored the final goal in this fixture at the most historic of grounds.

The result leaves Liverpool seven points clear at the top of the league, with 57 points to Arsenal’s 50.

Both sides now have the same amount of matches played, so the Reds have a seven-point lead with 14 matches to play.

Everton now sit in 15th, 10 points above the relegation zone.

Up next

It’s a quick turnaround for each team, with both in action this weekend in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s next match takes them to Wolves on Sunday afternoon, with kick-off at 2pm on 16 February.

Everton face Crystal Palace on Saturday evening, with that kicking off at 5.30pm.

Match facts

22:41 , Chris Wilson

Mohamed Salah has 14 assists in the Premier League this season, his highest total in a season.

It is the second most by any Liverpool player in a Premier League campaign, behind only Steve McManaman in 1995-96 (15).

Virgil van Dijk speaking to TNT Sports:

22:38 , Mike Jones

"Intense, it was always going to be intense. A lot of battles. Very disappointing to concede in the last second of the game, or even over extra time, but it is what it is. It isn't easy to accept it, especially in the manner how, but we take it and move on.

"I think the referee had a big part in the game today in terms of certain challenges were given as fouls and similar weren't. In the end it is just disappointing to concede a very good strike, but a disappointing one.

"This is their cup final and they would try to do everything in their power to make it difficult for us. It is a big boost for them but a blow for us."

Arne Slot loses cool as flurry of red cards brings Merseyside derby to riotus end

22:32 , Mike Jones

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was shown a red card after a chaotic end to the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

James Tarkowski scored an equaliser late in stoppage time to rescue a point for the hosts which encouraged Abdoulaye Doucoure to celebrate in front of the visiting Liverpool fans.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones was riled up by Doucoure’s actions and shoved the Everton midfielder kicking off a heated melee after the final whistle.

Arne Slot loses cool as flurry of red cards brings Merseyside derby to riotus end

David Moyes speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

22:31 , Mike Jones

"I thought the referee refereed the game well, he didn't get involved with every challenge. I think that it was a bit of an old fashioned game.

"I didn't see it from where I was. I have had a chance to see it and I'm disappointed because Doucoure played really well tonight and I'm going to now lose him because he's got a second yellow card which turned into a red.

"The emotions were running high here all night, the stadium was at fever pitch. You could see what it meant to supporters at the end of the game, the crowd was rocking. It was one of the big nights."

A final word from Moyes:

22:25 , Mike Jones

"It was right up there and it was great at the end. I think the night was maybe made for something to happen.

“It wasn't the greatest, it wasn't the cleanest game of football you've ever watched but it was a bit of a throwback, a bit scrappy for both sides. We had to find a way of making the gap not so big tonight and did a good job of it.

"The fact is I think the players have responded really well in what they've done. We've made more chances. Beto's come in and scored the goal, he's scored for us earlier on as well.

“That's really helped us, we've suddenly creating a few more chances than we had. All praise to the players."

More from Moyes:

22:18 , Mike Jones

"We're trying to improve what we can. We're trying to make things better. Tonight was a night where we had to suit the stadium, a lot of things in the game. We went more direct tonight but it suited us.

"We got it in the end and the point in the end more importantly is a point towards making sure we're a Premier League club.

"I think that us picking up the points regularly is what we've got to try and do between now and the end of the season. I think there's a group here who lack some quality in areas but we've got to try and fill in, we've got a few injuries but hopefully there are signs of one or two coming back."

FT Everton 2-2 Liverpool

22:16 , Mike Jones

Timed at 97:08, James Tarkowski’s equaliser for Everton was the latest goal scored on record (from 2006-07) in a Premier League Merseyside derby.

David Moyes speaking to TNT Sports:

22:15 , Mike Jones

"Mental probably sums it up. A brilliant finish for us, to finish the last Goodison Merseyside derby and score in the last minute is in a way fitting.

"We would have liked to have won the game but at 2-1 down I was just thinking that we probably weren't going to get back in, it just looked like Liverpool would keep us out.

"We worked hard, kept at it, probably had more attempts in the second half than the first. Tarky had the quality which was the one that really mattered."

FT Everton 2-2 Liverpool

22:07 , Mike Jones

Liverpool are undefeated in their last 20 games in the Premier League.

Their last longer unbeaten streak was from January to August 2022, a run of 21 games.

Jagielka on Slot's red card:

21:57 , Mike Jones

“You can see why Arne Slot was furious. There was a slight little nudge in the box and if that was my team I would be appealing. I would be getting sent off after the game too.

“Slot always talks about staying composed but it seems like he lost a bit of his composure at the end there. That's what a derby does to you.”

More from Tarkowski:

21:55 , Mike Jones

"Listen to [the noise from the stands], that's amazing. These will remember it. I'm just proud of my team, stuck at it, they [Liverpool] didn't create much, and we got the goal at the end.

We knew it was a tough game but we worked hard, restricted them to a minimum amount of shots.

“Disappointed with the way the goals go in but we've started to score a few goals now, thankfully we got two tonight."

James Tarkowski speaking to TNT Sports:

21:50 , Mike Jones

"Early on I got a chance and I panicked a bit. Late on I just decided to get in the box, it dropped, I just let it go and see what happens. Amazing to score and what an amazing night.

"I just saw the ball going wide and thought 'last minute, why not'. It managed to fall to me and let it rip.

"I don't score many so I thought it would have been typical if it was disallowed. I had a tough weekend so it's nice to get one back."

Reaction from Phil Jagielka

21:47 , Mike Jones

The former Everton captain spoke on TNT Sports saying:

“I was absolutely devastated to be having to come on here afterwards and explain how Everton lost the game. Thankfully I don't have to do that.

“Everton had a great game plan, put Liverpool under pressure the whole game and had the better chances. Captain marvel then stepped up and got the equaliser.”

Three red cards after the final whistle. It wouldn’t be a Merseyside derby with drama and sendings off now would it?

Red cards galore!

Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure have both been booked for their antics at the end of the game.

Both were already on yellow cards and thus have been sent off.

Arne Slot has also seemingly been shown a red card for getting involved with the match officials.

A messy end to a great game.

'That is the Salah effect'

21:08 , Richard Jolly at Goodison Park

“Was just about to say Liverpool had barely created anything in the second half until they scored.

“That is the Salah effect.

“But it also reflects on Arne Slot's changes with Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones playing pivotal parts in the goal.

“Everton had been the more threatening side until then.

“Now the only noise at Goodison is coming from the far corner where the Liverpool supporters are.”

GOAL! Everton 1-2 Liverpool (Mo Salah, 73')

Liverpool lead!

And it’s that man again. Mo Salah sends the Reds into the lead.

Luis Diaz flicks the ball into the box and it gets deflected. Curtis Jones wins it back, plays a one-two with Darwin Nunez then shoots.

20:53 , Richard Jolly at Goodison Park

“Liverpool started a Premier League game without an Englishman for the first time.

“Now they are bringing on two Merseysiders, in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones.

“It is earlier that Slot wanted to use the vice-captain but the booked Bradley is among those going off.”

Liverpool get the ball rolling for the final 45 minutes of the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

There’s been no changes at the break from either manager.

'Arne Slot has called for cool heads'

20:34 , Richard Jolly at Goodison Park

“Five first-half bookings could serve as a reminder that the Merseyside derby has produced more red cards in the Premier League than any other fixture.

“Arne Slot had called for cool heads - but not cool legs, in his phrase - from Liverpool beforehand.

“He may be annoyed with Andy Robertson's booking for kicking the ball away and Conor Bradley's caution for a foul that was barely even on the pitch.”

HT Everton 1-1 Liverpool

Beto nods it down for James Garner who is then clipped by Alexis Mac Allister.

'Ndiaye looked distraught'

20:04 , Richard Jolly at Goodison Park

“Iliman Ndiaye looked distraught when he came off, a knee injury ending his night.

“It could come at a cost to Everton creatively: Ndiaye is the one flair player.

“They were desperately short of goals under Sean Dyche.

“David Moyes as made them more attacking and they have seven goals in two-and-a-half home matches.

“But part of the was the Ndiaye factor.”

Everton 1-1 Liverpool

20:02 , Mike Jones

Liverpool will feel a lot better about that goal as they’re back on level terms.

Both teams know they can hurt the other one now though and this match should just get more lively from here.

Konate curls a pass out to Mo Salah as Mac Allister sprints into the box.

Salah’s cross finds the Argentine who glances his headed effort into the far corner!

'Bedlam at Goodison'

19:45 , Richard Jolly at Goodison Park

“Bedlam at Goodison as the newly prolific Beto scores.

“His name rings around this ground as perhaps it has never done before.

“If Everton long had a set-piece threat under Sean Dyche, David Moyes' team scored with a different kind of dead ball, a low free kick from Jarrad Branthwaite that Beto latched on to.

“And, as he did against Leicester, he finished calmly.”

GOAL! Everton 1-0 Liverpool (Beto, 11')

19:42 , Mike Jones

Everton’s shape is solid and they aren’t getting too far forward with the press.

It’s tough for Liverpool to play through them at the minute.

Everton 0-0 Liverpool

5 mins: It’s been a frenetic start as both teams look to advance.

David Moyes ready to bridge Everton-Liverpool divide starting with historic Merseyside derby

19:05 , Mike Jones

As Arne Slot looked forward to his first Merseyside derby, David Moyes looked back at some of his first 25.

He harked back to Lee Carsley’s winner in 2004, to the game Andy Johnson eviscerated Liverpool two years later.

There was the day Luis Suarez scored and dived in front of Moyes, the Uruguayan’s riposte after the Scot had noted his propensity to go to ground. He recalled the time when, as he said, the refereeing was more lenient.

Can Everton score versus Liverpool?

19:00 , Mike Jones

Everton have led 3-0 at half-time in both of their last two Premier League home games.

But, they face a brilliant Liverpool side tonight. Can they score and force the Reds to rethink their gameplan?

Liverpool's exceptional away form

18:55 , Mike Jones

Liverpool are unbeaten in 19 Premier League matches, winning 14 and drawing five.

They are yet to lose a top-flight away fixture this season, earning 30 points from a possible 36.

'131 years after an Everton win comes the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park'

18:53 , Richard Jolly at Goodison Park

“So, 131 years after a 3-0 Everton win, comes the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

“A safe prediction is this historic ground's final evening game will be loud, at least providing Everton are still in with a chance.

“Liverpool's last trip across Stanley Park ended in defeat in April on perhaps Sean Dyche's best night as Everton manager.

“It was, however, Everton's first home win over Liverpool since 2010, when their manager was a certain David Moyes.

“Now he is back and while both clubs lost in the FA Cup at the weekend, Everton have won their last three league games.”

Slot's ruthless side

18:50 , Mike Jones

In contrast to Everton’s struggles, Arne Slot's team have scored in each of their last 19 league games.

Pre-match thoughts from Arne Slot

18:45 , Mike Jones

The Liverpool boss said: "I look forward to every game we play but this is definitely a special one. We just walked into the stadium and what a historical stadium it is. We are all aware of the fact that it is the last time this match is being played over here so it is a game to look forward to.

"In this league it is important to win every single game. We know there is a long way to go and we have to win many, many games to stay in the position that we are now. We know our competitors are able to win many games in a row as well.”

Troubles in front of goal

18:45 , Mike Jones

Everton have scored just 23 goals in as many Premier League matches this season - only the bottom two, Ipswich and Southampton, have fewer.

However, only Liverpool and Nottingham Forest have kept more than Everton's total of nine clean sheets in this season's top flight.

Everton's Premier League wins at Goodison

18:40 , Chris Wilson

Intriguingly, Everton have only managed 10 wins over Liverpool at Goodison Park in the Premier league era.

The new competition started well for the Toffees at home, with the hosts winning the first three derbies at Goodison in 1992, 1993 and 1994.

Remarkably, a 2-0 win in October 1997 was the last derby win of the 90s at Goodison, with the club having to wait until 2004 for their next home win.

Wins came intermittently from then on, with an FA Cup win in 2009 sandwiched between victories in 2006 and 2010.

And the most remarkable run without a win came between 2010 and April 2024, when a 2-0 Everton win ended a run of 13 home derbies without a victory.

Slot on how Liverpool will win the Premier League

18:35 , Mike Jones

Liverpool are the favourites to win the Premier League title this season and Arne Slot knows his team cannot give ground to their rivals.

He said: “For me it is not about psychology.

“For me it is about having nine points or six points, that is the difference, [of a] lead against teams who are able to win so many games in a row.

“So leave out psychology, it is just going to be crucial to have so many points as possible because the teams we face are able to win every single game in the Premier League.”

Since David Moyes rejoined Everton there’s been a big turnaround in form.

Everton are aiming for a fourth consecutive league win for the first time since December 2023.

The Merseyside derby has produced 23 red cards during the Premier League era, the most of any fixture in the division.

Everton are aiming to win consecutive Merseyside league derbies for the first time since 1985.

Victory over the Reds last April was their first Merseyside league derby win at home in 13 attempts since October 2010 (D3, L9).

David Moyes determined to bridge gap to Liverpool

17:55 , Carl Markham

"We've always been chasing Liverpool, probably no more so than now," he said.

"I think the gap between the two teams at the moment is probably as big as it's been for a long time.

"It's something I have to try and bridge and start bringing the two clubs closer together. I certainly need to bring my club closer to their club if I can.

"There's a gulf between what's going on (regarding transfer comparisons) and everybody's aware of the situation here and the difficulty.

"But Everton had a great result against Liverpool last year (winning 2-0 in April) so that's the way football works.

"I've actually seen a bit of unpredictability in the Premier League this year with some of the results, so we have to go out there and try to turn the result around and make sure that we're the winners."

David Moyes' derby disasters

David Moyes won just three of his 22 Premier League Merseyside derbies in his first stint in charge of Everton between 2002 and 2013 (D7, L12).

Can he secure his fourth win tonight?

David Moyes determined to bridge gap to Liverpool

17:37 , Carl Markham

David Moyes accepts Everton have to find a way to bridge the "gulf" between them and the Liverpool squad in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The 122nd and final encounter against their Stanley Park neighbours sees one of the widest gaps between the two teams, with the Reds looking to go nine points clear at the top of the Premier League and their hosts 30 points behind, albeit nine clear of the bottom three.

Everton's net spend over the last decade is around £300million, most of that excess coming in the early years of the chaotic reign of former owner Farhad Moshiri, but recent seasons have seen a tightening of belts as the club struggled - and failed - to comply with profitability and sustainability rules.

Liverpool have spent over £580m during that time but have been rewarded with Premier League and Champions League titles, in addition to an FA Cup and two League Cups.

Arne Slot on Liverpool's upcoming run of games

17:20 , Richard Jolly

“For me it is not about psychology. For me it is about having nine points or six points, that is the difference, [of a] lead against teams who are able to win so many games in a row. So leave out psychology, it is just going to be crucial to have so many points as possible because the teams we face are able to win every single game in the Premier League.

“In the first half of the season, I said many times, judge the league table after 19 games but the thing is, Arsenal now played one more, but if you look at the games they already had [twice] - City, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Brighton, I think - so they have had quite a lot of teams that are doing really well so that is why it is important to try to extend the lead tomorrow. That is not going to be easy, obviously.”

Arne Slot reveals key factor that gives Arsenal hope in title race - and what Liverpool must do in defining period

17:00 , Richard Jolly

Arne Slot believes that taking a nine-point lead in the Premier League wouldn’t strike a psychological blow to Liverpool’s title rivals – but could prove crucial as he eyed Arsenal’s run-in.

League leaders Liverpool play their game in hand against Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday with the chance to go nine points ahead of Arsenal and 12 clear of third-place Nottingham Forest.

And it is the start of five league games in 15 days, with a rearranged trip to Aston Villa, brought forward from March because Liverpool are in the Carabao Cup final, now set for next Wednesday and meaning that Slot’s side could move up to 15 points clear of the Gunners if they beat Unai Emery's team.

But the Dutchman is aware that Arsenal finished last season strongly and feels they are capable of going on an extended winning run.

David Moyes confronts Liverpool’s key advantage ‘to start building Everton again’

16:40 , Richard Jolly

As Arne Slot looked forward to his first Merseyside derby, David Moyes looked back at some of his first 25.

He harked back to Lee Carsley’s winner in 2004, to the game Andy Johnson eviscerated Liverpool two years later. There was the day Luis Suarez scored and dived in front of Moyes, the Uruguayan’s riposte after the Scot had noted his propensity to go to ground. He recalled the time when, as he said, the refereeing was more lenient.

“When it was Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard it was just a question of who was going to kick who first,” he smiled. “I’ve got big memories of that.”

They were very different days to now.

Arne Slot: 'Nothing good comes from losing a football game'

16:20 , Richard Jolly

Arne Slot believes there are no benefits from getting knocked out of the FA Cup, even though it will reduce their workload, as he said Liverpool should be disappointed with both their display and the result against Championship strugglers Plymouth.

He added: “A wise man that once said to me that nothing good comes from losing a football game and I completely agree, so we would have definitely preferred to play six games in 18 days or seven in 21 or eight in 24 because that is the schedule we are in.

“Now with us losing this game, there is one moment where we have a normal week but that is definitely not what we wanted when we went to Plymouth.”

Liverpool issue update on Trent Alexander-Arnold fitness ahead of Merseyside derby

16:00 , Richard Jolly

Liverpool will make a late decision on whether to select Trent Alexander-Arnold for the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The vice-captain has missed their last two games with a thigh injury sustained in the win at Bournemouth but could give them a boost by returning to action at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

Head coach Arne Slot will assess the right-back in training before deciding whether to include him in the squad but will be without fellow defender Joe Gomez as he admitted he is worried by the injury he suffered in their FA Cup exit at Plymouth.

Arne Slot defends Liverpool team selection and says FA Cup line-up ‘done for a reason’

15:30 , Chris Wilson

Arne Slot declared his weakened FA Cup line-up at Plymouth was done “for a reason” as Liverpool faced up to a shock exit to Championship strugglers and criticism his team selection had devalued the competition.

Ryan Hardie’s second-half penalty secured a famous 1-0 win for Plymouth, rock bottom in the Championship, against the Premier League leaders in Sunday’s fourth-round tie at Home Park.

In what was Liverpool’s 13th game since Boxing Day and ahead of Wednesday’s Merseyside derby at Everton, Slot made 10 changes from the side which had dismantled Tottenham three days earlier to reach the Carabao Cup final.

Bournemouth burst Everton’s bubble to end David Moyes’ FA Cup dream

15:15 , Chris Wilson

Bournemouth burst Everton’s bubble to end David Moyes’ dream of bringing silverware back to the club – for this season at least – with a 2-0 FA Cup fourth-round victory.

After three successive league wins had eased relegation fears, the Scot hoped the cup would afford his players a release from the relentless pressure of the last couple of years, but the high-energy Cherries are not such accommodating opponents.

In Antoine Semenyo they have a livewire winger who has caused many defenders a problem and James Tarkowski will be pleased to see the back of the Ghana international after enduring a nightmare opening 45 minutes.

Arne Slot pinpoints where Liverpool went wrong in shock FA Cup defeat to Plymouth

15:15 , Chris Wilson

Arne Slot bemoaned a lack of creativity from his Liverpool side after being upset by Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle in a famous FA Cup shock.

The Reds saw their quadruple hopes dashed in the 1-0 defeat at Home Park after a Ryan Hardie penalty following Harvey Elliott handball.

And while Slot was quick to give credit to Miron Muslic’s side, the Dutch coach immediately highlighted just where the Premier League leaders fell short on a rare off day.

Liverpool stunned by Plymouth as quadruple hopes ended by FA Cup shock

15:00 , Chris Wilson

Plymouth produced a huge FA Cup upset as Premier League leaders Liverpool were knocked out by the bottom club in the Championship to end hopes of a historic quadruple.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot gambled with a weakened side in Devon and literally paid the penalty as Ryan Hardie’s second-half spot-kick gave Plymouth a famous 1-0 win and sent them into the fifth round of the competition.

It was only the fourth time that the team starting the day at the top of the Premier League has been eliminated from the FA Cup by a side from outside the top flight.
