Joel Selwood pulls up lame as hammy horror continues for Geelong

Geelong captain Joel Selwood has suffered a hamstring injury early in his side’s match against Collingwood at Optus Stadium.

The 32-year-old was attacking a contest early in the first quarter before pulling up lame and immediately grabbing at his left hamstring.

Selwood put his hand up immediately to signal to trainers he had hurt himself and was involved in deep discussions with the medical team before putting on a jacket and having his hamstring iced.

It continues a shocking fortnight of injuries for the Cats, with star Mitch Duncan and young gun Quinton Narkle both going down with hamstring injuries early in last week’s win over Brisbane.

There have been fears the reduced run-up of training to the season restart would leave players more exposed to potential soft-tissue injuries.

“It felt just like cramp and I shouldn’t be cramping in the first quarter,” Selwood told Channel 7.

“I came off and got tested. There was just enough there that in a season like it is not to continue on.”

Speaking after the game, Geelong coach Chris Scott indicated the injury is notable, but hopefully on the more minor side when it comes to time on the sidelines.

“I think speaking to [Joel] and the medical staff briefly they’re optimistic it’s not too bad but it always takes a bit of time to make that assessment,” he said.“There was no suggestion that we would think about putting him back on the ground so that says a little bit.”
