Matildas humbled by 'exceptional' Japan in SheBelieves Cup opener

The Matildas have fallen to a dour, 4-0 defeat to Asian rivals Japan in the opening SheBelieves Cup clash in Houston.
Japan, ranked seventh in the world, comprehensively outplayed their AFC rivals, highlighting an enormous technical gulf in class between the two sides.
Despite the Matildas playing, on paper, their strongest side — baring injured skipper Sam Kerr — the abject performance will raise serious concerns about the future of the side, with just 12 months before Australia hosts the women's Asian Cup, with the lack of a permanent coach just one sticking point.
"It wasn't good enough," Ellie Carpenter told Paramount+ after the match.
"It was a bad performance from us."
In a horror performance, Australia failed to generate a single shot on target throughout the match — the first shot from an Australian boot came as late as the 87th minute when substitute Charli Grant hit the crossbar.
Mina Tanaka scored a first half double, first capitalising on some desperately poor Matildas defence to flick home after just six minutes following a Fuga Nagano's shot and then pouncing on Alanna Kennedy and Clare Hunt getting in each other's way to poke past Mackenzie Arnold.

In the second half, Japan's Maika Hamano added a magical goal that typified Japan's technical brilliant, with precise, incisive passes more befitting of a surgeons table than a football pitch.
To add insult to injury, the physically superior Matildas were then beaten to a cross by Mieka Minami, who headed home from a well-worked short corner.
The Matildas never got into the game, Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso isolated up front, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Katrina Gorry overrun and almost anonymous in midfield.

Greater concern will be at the back though, with Japan's dynamic and industrious forwards running rings around the vastly experienced Kennedy and Hunt, finding gaps at will, with Steph Catley and Carpenter just as positionally vulnerable.
And while little fault can be directed at Mackenzie Arnold for the goals, her kicking game was hugely suspect and put her team under enormous pressure.
"Japan were very good, they gave us a bit of a football lesson," Tom Sermanni, managing his 145th Matildas game, said.
"It was one of those games that didn't work out for us, and it was well deserved. We were poor in a lot of areas.
"Japan were exceptional.
"It's a great lesson going into the Asian Cup, because it gives us a indication as to what we need to do next time we play them."
Next up for the Matildas is the daunting prospect of playing the USA, Olympic champions and world number ones, in Glendale, Arizona on Monday (AEDT).

We'll wrap things up here

So, that didn't quite go to plan, did it?
And, to be honest, it's hard to know where the Matildas go from here, when they have to take on the might of the USA.
The positive is that the substitutions injected some life into proceedings, and did make Australia look momentarily dangerous - albeit long after the game was done and dusted.
The USA is up next, the reigning Olympic champions, so it's good to know things can only get better...

That match kicks off at 9:00am AEDT on Monday morning, so we hope you'll join us for that.
Thanks for being with me - enjoy the rest of your weekend.

'We were poor': Tom Sermanni hails 'exceptional' Japan
By Simon Smale
By Simon Smale

Here is the interim coach Tom Sermanni.
"Firstly, Japan were very good, they gave us a bit of a football lesson to be honest," he says.
"We were poor in a lot of areas.
"It was one of those games that didn't work out for us, and it was well deserved."
Sermanni noted that there were some positives in that Australia has now been given a glaring indication as to what Japan is capable of.
"The positive of this is that it gives us a lesson the next time we play Japan," he says.
"We haven't had a lot of preparation coming into this camp, so when things go wrong...
"Japan were exceptional.
"It's a great lesson going into the Asian Cup, because it gives us a indication as to what we need to do next time we play them."
He says that one of the things that needs to be looked at ahead of the next match against Olympic Champions USA is selection.
"Overall, it was just one of those days where we weren't good enough," he says.
"To make matters worse, we gave away two very disappointing goals."

Ellie Carpenter is fronting up after that performance.
"Obviously very disappointed," she said.
"It was a bad performance from us.
"We weren't all on the same page with the press.
"It wasn't good enough tonight.
"We need to refocus and regroup ahead of the next match."

Some of your thoughts

Thank god it's finally over. While Tom was saying he wanted to see Australia win the tournament...we may very well end up last out of the four teams ????

It’s not just soul searching. Serious questions need to be asked about the coaching staff’s strategy & preparation for this game. The players should be embarrassed.
- Tracey
I don't know what to say.... it doesn't seem enough....
- Mike
Doesn't bode well for the Matildas a year out from the home Women's Asian Cup. Japan just too good for us, dominating in possession and capitalising on chances they got.

A good summation
By Simon Smale
By Simon Smale
Might seem like a strange metaphor though Japan played with digital precision, while Australia played with analogue variance. Never mind, put it down to a great learning experience. Except we should know better by now, we've played them often enough and we don't seem to improve against them. That equated to our worst loss against Japan.

Full-time: Japan 4-0 Matildas
By Simon Smale
By Simon Smale

The Matildas heaviest ever defeat at the hands of Japan comes just a year out from hosting the Asian Cup.
A lesson from the Japanese as to just how far off the pace this Matildas team is against the best team in the confederation.
The Tillies had just one shot in the 90 minutes, that being Charli Grant's 87th minute effort that came back off the crossbar.
Japan, meanwhile, had 8 on target, 18 in total, and utterly dominated.

Lovely defence from Prior, who had to lung at Ueki's shot, turning it behind for a corner.
From the corner Japan work another cross and Ueki heads over the bar.

Go easy on the criticism Simon. Its more annoying reading you bagging the Team. Go Matildas

I mean, I don't think any team deserves a free pass for what has been a truly woeful display.

A desperately poor peformance

OMG, I paid for a Paramount Membership to watch the Tillie’s ; I am shocked at how flat the team are against Japan. Can’t win playing defence 100% of the time; what ever happened to covering the opposing player and putting pressure on them to move the ball….soul crushing performance. I blame the coaching staff for this shamble.

88' Chance Matildas!
By Simon Smale

It's taken them a while, but suddenly Japan is being made to look a bit frantic at the back as the Matildas flood forward.
A nice touch from McNamara sees Raso get to the byline and Japan has to scramble to clear.
Another cross comes in from the right and this time it's just too hard and over the head of the waiting Matildas strikers.

Oh Charli Grant almost gets Australia on the board!
Their first shot on target. (Yep, their first after 87 minutes) sees Grant curl a shot from outside the area against the woodwork.

Shocker from Arnold, who gifts the ball straight to the feet of Ueki inside the six-yard box.
However, the Matildas keeper makes amends with a sharp stop.

This is starting to become cruel, the Japanese just toying with these beaten Matildas.
The women in blue are just passing the ball around simply and easily, every pass and short spell of possession the Matildas get ends in a Japanese player pushing them off the ball.
Ueki ends the torment with a driven effort from the edge of the penalty area, but it's blocked.

75' Goal Japan!
By Simon Smale
By Simon Smale

The Matildas fall asleep at a short corner — nicely worked by Japan, who cross perfectly for Moeka Minami to head past a stranded Mackenzie Arnold.
A very well-taken goal — and it just keeps getting worse for the Matildas.

Oh that's almost very nice, Urawa Reds right back Hana Takahashi is released down the right flank - but then her cross is just a bit overhit.
It almost crept in over the top of Arnold towards the goal, but fell safe enough over the cross bar.
