‘I’m here too’: Bumrah returns fire in Konstas battle as rare gesture lights fuse

After taking the world by storm in his Boxing Day debut innings, Sam Konstas’ on-field theatrics were matched Indian superstar Jasprit Bumrah after his dismissal on Sunday.

Fresh off his whirlwind 60 in Australia’s first innings on Day 1, Konstas had proved himself one of a handful of batters globally to take down Bumrah in the red-ball format. As he so often does though, Bumrah had the last laugh in this exciting battle — this time, literally.

As Australia looking to push the game forward amid a Test slowly drifting towards a draw, Bumrah knocked over the prodigy opener with a well-placed delivery sneaking through Konstas’ bat and pad.

With the bails flying promptly off the stumps at the Northern end of the MCG, Bumrah cheekily celebrated by lifting his arms aloft; signalling for the Indian crowd to heighten their already-loud noise, much like Konstas did in the field for Australia.

Given his introverted personality on-field, it’s rare to see Bumrah animated with his celebrations. But his light-hearted dig only added to what has been an epic series of Test cricket so far.

“What a showman,” former Australian spinner and Fox Cricket expert Kerry O’Keeffe said on commentary.

“You don’t see a lot of theatrics from Jasprit Bumrah normally. But (when) Sam Konstas was dismissed, he thought: ‘Yep, I’m here as well, don’t worry about that.’” Australian great Mark Waugh added.

Australia’s newest teenage Test cricketer Konstas has quickly become a Bay 13 favourite alongside Scott Boland this Test match, regularly entertaining the at-times rowdy Melbourne crowd when fielding on the boundary.

Bumrah’s gesture upon his dismissal was in reference to a move the 19-year-old star quickly warmed to when getting the crowd revved up.

He departed for eight runs off 18 balls, with Australia 2/53 at lunch on Day 4 and leading by 158 runs.
