Poland managed to overcome Saudi Arabia to win their second game at the World Cup.
Wojciech Szczesny made a brilliant save from Mohammed Kanno after he whipped a shot towards the Poland goal.
The game then came to life when Piotr Zielinski latched onto a bouncing ball in the box and fired it into the Saudi net. Saudi Arabia were then awarded a penalty for a foul on Saleh Al Shehri, but the spot kick was saved by Szczesny before he turned the follow-up over the bar.
Salem Al Dawsari blazed high and wide after the break, before Szczesny made another great save from Al Dawsari after a cross from the left. Saudi Arabia stayed on top for most of the half, but a mistake at the back allowed Robert Lewandowski in to score a second and wrap up the win.
Key momentWhen Saudi Arabia were awarded a penalty just before half-time, it seemed as though the momentum of this match was swinging in their favour. But the shot was saved by Wojciech Szczesny and, with that, Poland were able to drive forward and get the three points.
Sure, Saudi Arabia had chances to equalise in the second-half, but none of them were quite as good as a spot kick. Score that, and the game would have been theirs to go on and win after half-time.
Player of the match – Wojciech SzczesnyThere’s only one person that this award can go to — the former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The penalty alone was crucial, but his saves throughout the game won his side the match.
Szczesny can reflect very positively on this game and getting his side the three points.
