Lisa Marie had not updated her Instagram account since August 31 last year - the day after National Grief Awareness Day.

Apart from losing her father when she was only nine years old, Lisa Marie lost her only son, Benjamin Keough, to suicide in 2020.

Her final post about grief seems particularly eerie in the wake of her death - as Lisa Marie survived her own son, now Lisa Marie’s mother Priscilla, 77, has survived her own daughter.

“Hi. In honour of it being National Grief Awareness Day, I wrote an essay about grief which was posted today on PEOPLE,” Lisa Marie captioned her post, which showed a picture of her with Benjamin.

“I thought I’d post it here in the hopes that anyone who needs to hear all of this it helps in some way.”

In the article for PEOPLE, Lisa Marie wrote about the death of her son, saying she was “destroyed” but kept going for her other children - daughters Riley, Finley and Harper.

Lisa Marie said her grief at his loss was “horrific” and “unrelenting”.

“There is so much to learn and understand on the subject, but here’s what I know so far: One is that grief does not stop or go away in any sense, a year, or years after the loss,” she wrote.

“Grief is something you will have to carry with you for the rest of your life, in spite of what certain people or our culture wants us to believe.

“You do not ‘get over it,’ you do not ‘move on’, period.”

Lisa Marie went on to talk about the loneliness of grief, how some friends will “fall away” because they are uncomfortable with death and profound loss.

“This is where finding others who have experienced a similar loss can be the only way to go,” she wrote.

“Support groups that have your specific kind of loss in common. I go to them, and I hold them for other bereaved parents at my home.

“Nothing, absolutely NOTHING, takes away the pain, but finding support can sometimes help you feel a little bit less alone.”

The raw, unflinching article prompted hundreds of comments on Lisa Marie’s Instagram page after she linked to it.

“Thank you for sharing - it’s so honest - I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child,” one person wrote.

“You have handled your grief with such quiet, stoic dignity,” wrote another.

“That you have chosen to open up and speak out will no doubt help others get through hellish times.”

However, footage of Lisa Marie on the red carpet prompted concern, as she appeared to be slurring her words and unsteady on her feet.

As she spoke to an entertainment reporter, she clung to her companion, talent manager Jerry Schilling.

Less than two days later, she died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla Presley said in a statement on Thursday evening.

“She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known.”
