Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was left bloodied and bruised after suffering a horrendous facial injury during a crunch clash with Monaco.

PSG faced Monaco in a crucial Ligue 1 match at Stade Louis II, but the visitors lost their keeper early in the first half after a bloodcurdling challenge, The Sun reports.

Monaco’s Wilfried Singo broke down the right flank and looked to beat Donnarumma, 25, while under pressure from a defender.

Singo, 23, fired a weak shot that was blocked by the keeper as the Monaco ace then tried to jump over his opponent and avoid contact.

However, the 23-year-old caught Donnarumma’s face, studs first, with his right boot that left the keeper slumped on the turf as blood poured down his face.

PSG boss Luis Enrique had no other option but to take him off the pitch and replace him with back-up keeper Matvei Safonov after just 22 minutes.

Despite the nasty injury, Singo avoided any sanction from the referee despite already being on a yellow card.

“I don’t know if the referee was badly positioned but VAR needed to intervene, you have to protect the players,” said PSG captain Marquinhos.

“To not give a red in a situation like that, it’s a big call.”

The Italian goalkeeper showed off the full extent of his horror facial injury which required 10 staples.

Donnarumma joined PSG in 2021 on a five-year deal worth $100m AUD after failing to agree to terms on a contract extension with AC Milan, according to Sky Sports.

His contract with the French giants is set to expire in 2026 with extension talks reportedly put on hold earlier this year after his form dipped.

Despite losing their keeper in the opening half, PSG came from behind to secure the 4-2 victory and keep their unbeaten start to the season alive.

The result opens up a 10-point gap between PSG and their closest challengers Marseille and Monaco, the last team to beat the capital club away from the Parc des Princes in March 2023.

Luis Enrique’s side go to Lens on Sunday in the last 64 of the French Cup in their final game of the year before a rematch with Monaco in the Champions Trophy in Doha on January 5.
