Real Madrid vs Valencia live score updates highlights from Super
Real Madrid will play for the trophy on Sunday after getting past Valencia on penalties in a semifinal which saw neither team at their best. Barcelona or Real Betis stand between Real and the Super Cup.

Real Madrid reached the final of the 2023 Spanish Super Cup, but they needed penalty kicks to get past Valencia in the first semifinal of the competition played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Los Merengues will now get the chance to win their second trophy of the 2022/23 season on Sunday when they take on the winner of Thursday's semifinal between Barcelona and Real Betis.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois stopped an attempt by Valencia captain Jose Gaya to end the shootout, during which Real were perfect. However, the defending La Liga champions were far from it during the 90 minutes of regulation and extra time.

Outside of solo flashes from Vinicius Jr, and a couple of shots from distance, Real Madrid were not effective in buildup play and rarely threatened. When they did, Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamadarshvili was up to the task, but he couldn't stop any of their penalties in the shootout.

Real Madrid took the lead on a Karim Benzema penalty kick after the reigning Ballon d'Or winner was brought down in the Valencia box. But Valencia responded within 30 seconds of the second half kicking off as Samuel Lino applied the far-post finish on a curling Toni Lato cross.

End Extra Time: Real Madrid 1, Valencia 1

120th min.: We're heading to penalties.

114th min.: SUB Valencia. Hugo Guillamon is on for the young Fran Perez, who will be having nightmares about that missed chance. Valencia playing for penalties at this point.

110th min.: Chance Valencia! Fran Perez is through on goal, but instead of passing it to Edinson Cavani, he took a shot that went right into Thibaut Courtois, who closed the angle. That was a golden opportunity to seal the match.

110th min.: The referee blew the play dead on this chance for Real Madrid, but fans of Los Merengues say he shouldn't have blown his whistle.

The issue is that this was called a handball and some think this is up for question.

109th min.: Yellow card Real Madrid. Nacho Fernandez goes in the book for tripping up Edinson Cavani from behind. This match is moving closer to penalties.

106th min.: Extra time resumes. Dani Ceballos is in for Real Madrid's Fede Valverde. Fresh legs for Madrid's midfield.

End 1st Extra Time period: Real Madrid 1, Valencia 1

105th min.: Chance Real Madrid! Another save by Mamardashvili on a blast by Toni Kroos. Another flurry by Real Madrid, but Valencia have numbers behind the ball and when the defenders can't get to it, the goalkeeper is there.

98th min.: Yellow card Valencia. It's shown to Andre Almeida for stopping a promising attack led by Marco Asensio.

95th min.: SUBS Valencia. Dimitri Foulquier and Ilaix Moriba are on for right-winger Toni Lato who was cramping up, and midfielder Yunus Musah, respectively.

93rd min.: Chance Real Madrid! Vinicius attempts a curler at the top of the box, but Valencia's goalkeeper Mamardashvili stops him again.

91st min.: Extra time is underway. Real Madrid looked better to close out the second half. We'll see if they can carry over that momentum into extra time. Outside of that late pressure they put together very little in that second half.

End regulation: Real Madrid 1, Valencia 1

97th min.: We're heading to extra time.

95th min.: What a chance for Real Madrid! The ball is deflected to a wide-open Vinicius Jr. who can't beat Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Real Madrid is putting together a late flurry here.

90th min.: Seven minutes of stoppage time. It's been a poor second half with few chances and very little rhythm. Especially with the injuries suffered by both teams, this is going to be a slog if we get to extra time.

88th min.: Chance Real Madrid! The defending La Liga champs are capable of a flash of brilliance and they almost got it with Karim Benzema heading a Fede Valverde cross just off target. That was Real Madrid's first real attempt of the entire second half.

84th min.: SUB Real Madrid. Marco Asensio comes into the match for Rodrygo who was invisible in the second half.

82nd min.: SUB Valencia. Academy product Fran Perez comes on for Samuel Lino, who slipped and looked to pull something, though it may have also been a cramp.

79th min.: We're 10 minutes away from extra time. Real Madrid have picked up three injuries (Camavinga reportedly also has ice on his knee on the bench) and they haven't been able to muster a response in this second half. The younger legs of Valencia could prove the difference. They smell blood in the water.

74th min.: SUB Real Madrid. And now it's Ferland Mendy coming on for Eder Militao who stayed in the match after that blow to the head and now has to come out. He didn't look well right after he was struck by the shot. It took 20 minutes for him to come off. Nacho will play center-back with Mendy at left-back.

73rd min.: SUB Valencia. Hugo Duro comes on for Justin Kluivert at forward. It was a tough day for Kluivert: a lot of running but very little end product and a yellow card he picked up.

69th min.: SUB Real Madrid. Dani Carvajal comes on for Lucas Vazquez, who's limping down the sidelines.

65th min.: Injury stoppage. This time it's Real right-back Lucas Vazquez who fell awkwardly on a run, and Dani Carvajal is already warming up. But Vazquez is going to give it a try.

63rd min.: That goal has given Valencia belief. This is anyone's game at this point. That was a blow to Real, and they've lost some of the edge they had in the first half. Valencia looking the better team so far in this second half.

54th min.: Injury stoppage. Real Madrid's Eder Militao takes a shot to the head and needs treatment. He looks shaken up but comes back into the game.

46th min.: Goal Valencia! It's Samuel Lino who beats Lucas Vazquez to a beautiful curling cross into the box and he takes it on the volley in the six-yard box.

That cross by Toni Lato from the right side was delightful.

Halftime: Real Madrid imposed themselves to start, then Valencia gained the upper hand. An Edinson Cavani header saved by Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was the best chance until Valencia defender Eray Comert brought down Benzema in the box and the Ballon d'Or winner converted.

The match is finely balanced, and Valencia are definitely not out of it. But there's a distinct feel that Real's forward's are more dangerous than anything Valencia can muster.

Halftime: The half ends with Real Madrid complaining to the referee they should have had another penalty for a reckless push on Nacho on the edge of the box. No whistle from the referee.

45th min.: Offside Valencia. Three players were beyond the last defender to erase a play that ended with a point-blank shot by Edinson Cavani. Two minutes of stoppage time.

39th min.: Goal Real Madrid! Benzema as cool as usual, slots home the penalty.

38th min.: Penalty Real Madrid! Long ball over the top for Karim Benzema and Eray Comert sticks a leg out and knocks down Benzema as he was about to shoot on goal. Comert also gets a yellow card for his troubles. And there was no offside on the Militao long ball.

30th min.: Chance Real Madrid. Vinicius creates it himself. He pulls off the dummy move near midfield on Valencia right-back Thierry Correia and sprints all the way into the box to earn a corner.

28th min.: Yellow card Real Madrid. It's Eduardo Camavinga who gets it for a foul on Toni Lato.

25th min.: Valencia spent a good five minutes in Real's half, taking advantage of a handful of free kicks and corner kicks, but nothing that Real Madrid couldn't handle defensively.

20th min.: Valencia want a penalty. Toni Lato got the ball in the box with space and Courtois came off his line to challenge, but Lato goes on a dive. No way that's a penalty. The referee doesn't bite.

19th min.: Chance Valencia! Just as Real Madrid were getting into a flow and enjoying their best period of the match, Valencia created a look against the run of play, but Edinson Cavani's header couldn't get past Courtois.

15th min.: Chances Real Madrid. Karim Benzema can also bring the game to life of course. He danced around the Valencia defenders in the box and just missed the left post. Then moments later it was Fede Valverde with a grass-cutter that also barely missed the left post.

10th min.: It's been a subdued start to this one that comes to life when Rodrygo or Vinicius get on the ball. On one chance it was Rodrygo running through the heart of the Valencia defense, but his shot didn't threaten.

8th min.: It's the 200th match at the helm of Real Madrid for Carlo Ancelotti. Here's the breakdown:

The only available regular who is not in the starting lineup is Luka Modric, who drops to the bench. With Aurelien Tchouameni injured, Ancelotti has selected Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde in midfield alongside Toni Kroos.

For Valencia, Edinson Cavani starts up front alongside Roma loanee Justin Kluivert who gets a rare chance here.

105 mins from kickoff: Real Madrid and Barcelona, understandably, are two of the more successful teams in the Supercopa de Espana by a wide margin. As such, they are also the teams that have been a consistent presence in the expanded edition of the competition since moving to four teams in 2019.

Conversely, this is a big moment for Valencia as they hope to lift a rare trophy, and have been bitten recently in the new format of the competition.

2 - Real Madrid are one of only two teams to have contested all three editions of the Supercopa since the four-team format change, along with Barcelona, winning the title in two of their last three appearances (2020 and 2022), failing only in 2021. King. pic.twitter.com/LaIpAq58Qk

1 - Valencia have only won the Supercopa in one of their five appearances, their first under Héctor Cúper in 1999. 120 mins from kickoff: The match will be a battle between two Italian coaches. Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti once coached Valencia's Gennaro Gattuso, but the veteran manager admitted to having a personality clash with the former midfield hardman. Their interactions will be one to watch.
