Sevilla vs Man United live updates, highlights from Europa League

86 mins: Sevilla 3-0 Man United

Anthony Elanga replaces Christian Eriksen, who couldn't inspire United tonight.

83 mins: Sevilla 3-0 Man United

Sevilla are on course to face Juventus, who are 2-1 ahead on aggregate against Sporting.

81 mins: Sevilla 3-0 Man United

That was another dreadful goal to concede. David de Gea, for reasons undoubtedly only known to him, raced out of his goal to limply attempt a clearance from a Sevilla long ball.

The goalkeeper rolled possession straight to the first goalscorer, who converted into the empty net. Sevilla are cruising!

80 mins: GOAL – Sevilla 3-0 Man United (Youssef En-Nesyri)

That is surely the tie wrapped up for Sevilla!

78 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Another injury worry for United: Luka Shaw is hobbling around.

75 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

It's been a beautiful day for Bono so far, who won't mind being booked for timewasting, even if it's a little early to be doing so.

Sevilla then threaten from the flanks again. It's debatable whether they really need to run the clock down, on this form.

There again, there were two decisive goals in the first leg after the 83rd minute.

72 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Christian Eriksen applies impressive technique and power to the freekick, but not accuracy. It flies comfortably wide.

71 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

United win a free-kick in a useful position within sight of goal. It's not quite now or never, but it's not far off.

70 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Sevilla have scored two or more goals in each of their last seven home matches in all competitions. They'd love a third here.

68 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

We should have pointed out earlier that Wout Weghorst has replaced Anthony Martial in attack for United.

The Netherlands international has had a sight of goal but it would be a stretch to say he's made his side look noticeably more dangerous.

65 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Sevilla threaten to put the tie out of reach. Substitute Suso's shot goes behind off a United player, and Youssef En-Nesyri has ample space in which to direct a header at goal from the resulting corner but produces a woeful effort.

63 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Casemiro curls in a shot on the turn from distance. Goalkeeper Bono beats it away with something to spare.

61 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Luke Shaw swings in a hopeful cross from the right. Marcos Acuna heads it away.

You get the impression Sevilla are happy to let United attack and wait for their chance to counter, as any sensible tactician might advise in this position.

60 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

"It's been so bad for United tonight," says former Red Devils midfielder Robbie Savage on BT Sport. "But credit to Sevilla."

58 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Antony kicks out in frustration after being sandwiched between two markers on the edge of the Sevilla penalty area on United's right.

Ten Hag will want cool heads rather than petulance right now, but he didn't get it from the Brazil winger there.

56 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Wout Weghorst is warming up on the sideline for United. Marcus Rashford has been on the ball a little more inside the Sevilla half on his comeback from injury, but the Liga side are dealing fairly comfortably with everything that's coming their way.

53 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Christian Eriksen sends in a corner from the right that comes to nothing. His side have around 40 minutes in which to score at least twice.

51 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Almost a third! So many Sevilla players almost stab the ball over the line that it's hard to tell who's gone closest in an almighty scramble on United's line.

The visitors are spared by the referee's whistle. An infringement has been spotted somewhere in the melee.

48 mins: Sevilla 2-0 Man United

That was another poor goal to concede. Ivan Rakitic swung in a corner from the right and Loic Bade leapt to divert the ball over David de Gea, whose positioning was questionable, and into the far corner of the goalkeeper's net!

Sevilla surely have a foot in the semifinals they are so familiar with now...

47 mins: GOAL – Sevilla 2-0 Man United

Please ignore the question posed in that previous post. Sevilla are 4-2 ahead on aggregate!

46 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Erik ten Hag's clearly not been impressed by that first half. Luke Shaw replaces Aaron Wan-Bissaka and top scorer Marcus Rashford is on for Jadon Sancho.

Will that change the momentum?

Halftime: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Fluent, threatening Sevilla will be much the happier with that half, taking the lead when Youssef En-Nesyri pounced on poor defending and going close to scoring a second since.

For United, there's been a distinct lack of cutting edge despite some useful wingplay from Antony and Jadon Sancho – but it's their willingness to gift possession away that has hurt them most. Improving at both ends is imperative if they are to extend their European season.

45 mins +2: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

United win a corner on their right after Casemiro's shot from the opposite side is deflected wide.

Maguire nods the delivery down before Sevilla clear, then break effectively and skim a cross from the right across their opponents' penalty area and behind.

45 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Sevilla have the first chance of four minutes of added time at the end of this half with a corner on the left.

Harry Maguire heads the delivery away and United win a throw-in deep inside their own territory. They're being increasingly pinned in – and, on the evidence of this game so far, Sevilla must be confident of forcing them into more mistakes.

42 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

United survive! Victor Lindelof played Lucas Ocampos offside by the slenderest of margins in a move that could easily have ended in a goal being awarded.

39 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

This could be two, but there will be a VAR check...

Casemiro gives possession away uncharacteristically easy in a dangerous area. Youssef En-Nesyri sends Marcos Acuna away on the left, who cuts a pass back for Lucas Ocampos to fire past David de Gea's dive.

Now to find out if it counts. Ocampos may have been marginally offside, but it's a real 50-50.

38 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Erik Lamela forces a save from David de Gea with a low shot from the outside of a boot, then Sevilla want a penalty after the ball hits Harry Maguire's torso from the ensuing attack. The hosts are enjoying themselves.

35 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Antony nears the edge of the penalty area on the right and sends an inswinging corner towards the far post.

Casemiro leaps well to meet it but the angle is tricky and the lynchpin can only guide his header comfortably over the target.

33 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Former United midfielder Robbie Savage, who's on BT Sport duties tonight, accuses United of being indecisive during this first half. They certainly were for that first goal, when David de Gea's eventual selection of a pass cost them dearly.

31 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Sevilla's formidable reputation in this competition is coming to the fore again here. United are struggling to trouble the hosts, who may feel a little unlucky not to be further ahead.

28 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Oh dear. Sevilla central defender Marcao immediately goes down with what is obviously a painful hamstring injury.

The Brazilian returns to his feet but is visibly upset as he has to make way for Suso. Sevilla haven't had to do a great deal of meaningful defending so far, but that's a major blow.

26 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Nemanja Gudelj shows immense skills to send an accurate rabona cross from the left towards the centre of the penalty area.

Marcos Acuna gets his head in first and nods the ball down for Youssuf El-Nesyri in front of goal, who is denied by De Gea in the nick of time as the goalkeeper pounces at his feet.

Sevilla are chasing a second, while United are living dangerously. They look wobbly every time they have to defend.

23 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Jadon Sancho does dangerous work on the left, breaking free and cutting inside before rolling a low pass into the path of Christian Eriksen in a central position on the edge of the penalty area.

Eriksen's shot is deflected into the path of the unlikely attacking figure of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who responds with all the conviction you'd expect from a fullback not known for his goals.

20 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Sevilla have not lost at home to non-Spanish opposition in the Europa League, qualifying phase included, since a 2-1 defeat against Porto in the 2010/11 round of 32 first leg.

17 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Marcos Acuna concedes a freekick deep in Sevilla territory after Antony causes him a moment of concern on the right.

Eriksen looks up and swings in a cross to no effect. United have produced very little threat so far.

14 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Ivan Rakitic tries his luck again – more justifiably this time, from a centrally-placed freekick just outside the penalty area after a foul by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

He blasts it straight at the wall.

12 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Ivan Rakitic gives United a scare, lobbing David de Gea from a considerable distance with an eye-catching strike.

Fortunately for the visitors, Sevilla have already been penalised for a foul on Antony.

11 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

The already-hot atmosphere, as you'd expect, has gone up a notch since that goal. Sevilla look in control at the moment, while United look shaken.

9 mins: Sevilla 1-0 Man United

Having scored two own-goals late in the first leg, that was more nightmarish defending from the Premier League side.

Goalkeeper David de Gea seems oblivious of the pressure his side are under as he plays a casual short pass out to Maguire in a dangerous position. Erik Lamela gladly pickpockets the crowded centreback, who feeds Youssef En-Nesryi to slot a composed finish past De Gea.

Sevilla capitalise on more hapless play at the back from their opponents!

8 mins: GOAL – Sevilla 1-0 Man United (Youssef En-Nesyri)

Calamity for United!

6 mins: Sevilla 0-0 Man United

Antony has his first proper run at Sevilla's defence on the right. The winger scored his first goal in 15 Premier League games on Sunday, but the success with which he cut inside is badly missing here: he sends an attempted crossfield pass out of play on the far side.

4 mins: Sevilla 0-0 Man United

A slight note of concern for United: Marcel Sabitzer, who missed the win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday with a late groin injury, appears to be receiving some attentions.

2 mins: Sevilla 0-0 Man United

A promising United attack fizzles out after Bono sends a clearance straight into the path of Christian Eriksen.

The playmaker releases Jadon Sancho down the right, who runs the ball behind. Should do better.

1 min: Sevilla 0-0 Man United

Here we go! United kick off, then give possession away cheaply and almost concede a corner down their right after Aaron Wan-Bissaka makes a mess of a backheel. It's a goalkick.

15 mins from kickoff: "It feels like a final," United legend Paul Scholes says of the simmering atmosphere.

A reminder: the winners here will face Juventus or Sporting in the semifinals. Juve are 1-0 ahead before tonight's second leg in Lisbon.

Sporting have burst out of their huddle and headed down the tunnel to a suitably loud roar from the home fans.

25 mins from kickoff: The warm-ups are well underway here. "They were in a relegation battle but, after beating Valencia, they're away from that," says former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves on BT Sport.

"This game is their season. There's so much riding on it for them."

100 mins from kickoff: Stats time... and if you're a United fan looking for positive signs:

  • Your team have won all three of their previous ties at this stage of the Europa League.
  • They're unbeaten in their last 10 UEFA Europa League matches, winning eight of them.
  • The visitors tonight haven't lost in their last eight European away matches, winning five.
  • United have not lost any of their last six European matches against Spanish clubs, winning four.

Confident?

120 mins from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' coverage of Sevilla and Man United's do-or-die second leg in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals!

Approaching the 85th minute a week ago at Old Trafford, fans of the Premier League side could justifiably have expected this decider to offer a clear and fairly routine path to the final four of the competition, which offers a place in next season's Champions League to the winners.

Marcel Sabitzer's two early goals then became a distant memory as Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire scored own goals within nine minutes of each other in a scarcely believable end to the game. It's set us up for a tantalising, unpredictable return in around two hours' time.

Sevilla vs Man United predicted lineups

Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar made sweeping changes for Sevilla's 2-0 La Liga win at struggling Valencia last weekend and he is expected to recall his key stars against United.

Bruno Fernandes' suspension will force a change in midfield for United counterpart Erik Ten Hag with the visitors also struggling with injury issues in defence with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane ruled out.

Below are the projected starting lineups for both teams ahead of their Europa League match at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on April 20.

Sevilla predicted starting 11

(4-2-3-1): Dmitrovic (GK) — Montiel, Rekik, Nianzou, Acuna — Gudelj, Fernando — Ocampos, Rakitic, Torres — En-Nesyri

  • Injured: None
  • Suspended: None

Mendilibar is banking on the Europa League offering his team a back door into Europe in 2023/24 with his squad unable to maintain consistency on the domestic front this season.

Bono struggled at Old Trafford, and Serbian international Marko Dmitrovic is set to replace him in goal, with top scorer Youssef En-Nesyri also starting, after only being fit enough for the bench last week.

Man United starting 11

(4-2-3-1): De Gea (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw — Casemiro, Fred — Antony, Eriksen, Sancho — Martial

  • Injured: Martinez, Van de Beek, Varane, Heaton, Sabitzer, Jones, Garnacho, McTominay
  • Suspended: Fernandes

United's busy schedule means Ten Hag has to balance his starting XI, to maintain freshness ahead of a busy few weeks across all competitions. Fernandes' ban is set to be covered by the returning Christian Eriksen, alongside Casemiro, with star man Marcus Rashford back in training following injury.
