43rd over - Lyon continues to wreak havoc for Australia
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Lyon into the eighth over of his spell. He's got 2-14 so far in this spell alone.
CLOSE CALL! Lyon gets one to kick up from around the wicket and Chandimal's inside edge onto his pads lands juuuust short of Travis Head at short leg.
DANGER AGAIN! Chandimal comes down the track and misses a loose shot, and he's almost run out! Makes it back into his crease safely.
This angle to Chandimal from around the wicket is excellent.
Another maiden over in the end for the Aussie champion.

42nd over - Chandimal brings up his half-century
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Kuhnemann to continue, Chandimal on strike. These two are bowling beautifully in tandem.
Some more indecisiveness! Chandimal knocks Kuhnemann to mid on and initially wants a single, but sends Kamindu back. That would've been suicidal.
Kuhnemann bowls from wider of the crease to change up the angle a bit, but Chandimal defends well down the pitch.
After a couple of deliveries from wide of the crease, Kuhnemann is back closer to the stumps. A nice little change-up.
Eventually he strays onto the pads and Chandimal knocks it onto the leg side to bring up his half-century.
It's been another excellent knock from Sri Lanka's number three, but they need him to go big here.
41st over - Kamindu gets a caught behind dismissal overturned
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Lyon to continue. That last wicket was his 150th in Tests played in Asia, the most by any Aussie spinner.
DANGER! Kamindu skips down the track and gets beaten in the air, gets a leading edge onto the off side for a single.
Lyon's just got that really good rhythm at the moment. Hunting a big bag of wickets here.
He stays around the wicket to Chandimal, who is closing in on a second half-century for the series.
Chandimal skips down the wicket and drives Lyon through the covers and calls for two, but Kamindu opts against it. Good decision in the end.
BIG CAUGHT BEHIND APPEAL AND IT'S GIVEN! Kamindu Mendis has sent this decision upstairs. Replays show there's miles between the ball and the bat. The on-field decision is overturned. That's a Joel Wilson special.

40th over - Chandimal and Kamindu get things moving again
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Kuhnemann to continue. He had as much to do with that Mathews wicket as Lyon did.
Just refused to let him off strike with an easy single, and eventually he combusted.
Kuhnemann gets a little too straight to Chandimal, who works him through the leg side for a single.
Kamindu on strike now, this will be an interesting battle. The left-hander had his moments against Kuhnemann in the first Test, but was dismissed going for one too many big hits in the second innings.
Kuhnemann starts over the wicket to Kamindu. He's got three men out on the leg side.
Kamindu defends the first ball into the off side for a quick single, good delivery.
Back around the wicket to Chandimal, who drives him past mid off for another single.
Kamindu uses his feet well and knocks Kuhnemann down to deep mid on for another single.

39th over - Australia on top after another Lyon strike
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Lyon continues his spell. Chandimal on strike.
FOUR! Great shot! He shuffles down the track and beats the man at mid off. It was a little bit uppish, but minimal risk.
That will release some of the pressure on Sri Lanka. The 100is also up.
Lyon bowls a straight one which Chandimal nurdles onto the off side for a single.
Kamindu Mendis the new man in the middle after Mathews's dismissal.
He's not going to hang around, we've seen that in the first Test.
Lyon immediately goes around the wicket to the left-hander.
Kamindu skips down the track and defends the final ball into the off side. Both these batters will use their feet.
Lyon ends Mathews's painful innings!
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Angelo Mathews goes!
That was a nothing innings from the Sri Lankan veteran, who departs for 1 off 26 deliveries.
Lyon floated one up wide outside off stump and Mathews tries to defend it and nicks through to Alex Carey.
That was always coming. Australia right on top now.

38th over - Australia continues to keep a lid on things
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Kuhnemann to continue. Australia right on top here after lunch.
Something has got to give, and soon.
Chandimal skips down the track with the first delivery and gets a single to break the shackles just a little bit.
Here's Mathews now. How will he approach the left-armer?
Kuhnemann angles one into Mathews's leg stump, which he awkwardly defends down the pitch.
Mathews has missed out! It's a short one that he punches into the off side, but he can't beat the in-field.
Another ball that Kuhnemann gets away with, this is on his pads and Mathews flicks it straight to the man at midwicket.
Defends a good ball into the leg side to end the over. He's 1 off 25 now.

37th over - Mathews unable to get off strike
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Lyon back over the wicket to Mathews to start the over.
Mathews with a little shuffle down the track, tries to pick up a single to long on, but Lyon scurries over to keep him on strike.
CLOSE! Lyon goes a tiny bit shorter and Mathews is caught in two minds and chops down on the ball, which almost rolls onto the stumps.
Mathews looks jittery at the best of times, but he looks especially anxious out here at the moment.
If he's not going to use his feet or sweep, Lyon will keep him on strike.
Mathews sees out another maiden and he's not 1 off 20 balls.

36th over - Kuhnemann bowls a second straight maiden
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Australia in a really good rhythm after lunch, their energy is up, no doubt buoyed by that wicket.
Marnus Labuschagne very lippy fielding in close quarters.
Kuhnemann continues around the wicket to Chandimal, who is curbing his natural attacking instincts at the moment.
Another excellent over, a second maiden in a row for Kuhnemann.
Sri Lanka has scored eight runs in six overs since lunch.

35th over - Lyon continues to keep Mathews locked up
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Lyon continues, this time to Chandimal. He's going around the wicket here.
Chandimal's wicket becomes doubly important now. Sri Lanka will not want to lose two set batters in quick succession.
Chandimal skips down the track and gets a single to long on.
Lyon stays around the wicket to Mathews as well. I like this line of attack.
A bit of indecision as Mathews drops one into the off-side and briefly considers a quick single. Chandimal is not having a bar of it.
Lyon goes over the wicket for the final ball, which is defended down the pitch by Mathews, who is 1 off 14 balls.

34th over - Kuhnemann keeps the pressure on
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Sri Lanka's run rate has dropped to 2.84 per over. Just 25 runs off the last 10 overs.
Kuhnemann continues around the wicket to Mathews. He'll have to watch out for the straighter one.
Smith has two slips and a short leg in as Kuhnemann attacks the stumps.
Kuhnemann's line has been excellent here, he's not giving Mathews any freebies.
It's Kuhnemann's first maiden over of the match.

33rd over - Lyon gives Australia a much-needed breakthrough
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
BEATEN! Some spin for Lyon from around the wicket! He beats Karunaratne's lazy back foot poke.
Angelo Mathews the new man at the crease after Karunaratne's dismissal.
Replays show Karunaratne actually got an under edge with the ball then bouncing onto the stumps.
Lyon comes over the wicket to Mathews, who he dismissed twice in the first Test.
Mathews is forward and defending his first delivery.
Lyon goes shorter and Mathews punches it down to long on to get off the mark.
Lyon strikes to remove Karunaratne after lunch!
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Brilliant bowling from Nathan Lyon!
He bowls a quicker straighter delivery from around the wicket that keeps slightly low and the ball beats Dimuth Karunaratne's back footed defensive shot and removes the leg-stump bail.

He should've been forward to that one.
Karunaratne played well, but he's got to go for 36 and that's the breakthrough Australia wanted after lunch.

32nd over - Kuhnemann to partner Lyon after lunch
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Matthew Kuhnemann starting around the wicket to Karunaratne.
He's strayed too far on the leg side a few times from this angle, and Karunaratne whips him onto the leg side for another easy single.
I don't mind this line to the right-handed Chandimal.
The good news for Australia is Sri Lanka's run rate isn't too high at the moment, so they're only a few wickets away from getting back into this.
Kuhnemann ends with some nice deliveries on the mark which Chandimal defends back down the pitch.

31st over - Lyon to kick things off after lunch
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Lyon begins around the wicket to Karunaratne, who flicks the first ball comfortably into the leg side.
The first half and hour in this session is going to be vital. If these two can get through without being dismissed, it'll go a long way towards a big score for Sri Lanka.
Lyon comes over the wicket to Chandimal. There's no rough to work with to the right-hander from this end.
A couple of great shots from Chandimal for no run as he picks out the fielder in the covers with firstly a cut shot and then a gorgeous cover drive.
FOUR! This time Chandimal doesn't miss out! Another one that's a little short and wide from Lyon, and Chandimal rocks back and cuts it through point for a boundary.

Explaining 'umpire's call'
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
Hi Jon/Chris. Do you happen to know the logic behind the review being retained if it’s “umpires call”. Surely if a team reviews they think the umpire is wrong and logically if the DRS umpire says he’s not wrong , he must be right. There’s no third alternative.
- Phillip
Hi Phillip,
While I certainly get what you're saying, I think the retained review for the umpire's call is good because often these things, such as the earlier Nissanka decision, are decided by millimetres. So it's a little harsh to dock a side of one of its reviews.
It's a nice way for both the umpires and players to have a win.

How well will this pitch behave?
By Chris De Silva
By Chris De Silva
With this being the second test in a row in galle and now Sri Lanka is batting first, is the wicket expected to act similarly to the first test? Will this help Sri Lanka secure a big first innings?
- Alex
Hi Alex,
While the venue for this match is the same, the pitch is a different one on the centre square.
This pitch, by all accounts, is expected to misbehave a lot earlier than the one from the first Test.
We've seen already that it's turned big on day one, so will get tougher and tougher to bat on.

Nathan McSweeney overlooked again
By Jon Healy
By Jon Healy

Remember Nathan McSweeney? I do, you likely do, but I'm not sure if Australia's selectors do.
The South Australian middle-order batter won a bat-off and was picked to open to start the Test series against India. Save for an impressive fighting innings of 39 under lights in the second Test, he mostly got Bumrah'd along with the rest of the Aussie batting line-up not named Travis Head.
After just three games batting out of position, the 25-year-old was dropped for 19-year-old opener Sam Konstas for the Boxing Day Test. Then Beau Webster was preferred at number six for Sydney.
In the first game in Sri Lanka, his name was barely uttered when the team was looking for a middle-order replacement for Travis Head, who was promoted to open in place of Konstas. Josh Inglis was handed a debut and got the chance to pummel an exhausted Sri Lankan attack on a flat deck, which was a far cry from Jasprit Bumrah on lively Aussie decks.
Then, when Konstas was sent home to get some Sheffield Shield reps in, McSweeney stayed in Sri Lanka with the team hinting at another possible change. But, once again, when looking for a player in a mould he seemingly fit, selectors looked elsewhere.
Only needing a draw to secure the series win, Australia appears to have gone with safety by extending the batting, dropping frontline spinner Todd Murphy for part-timer Cooper Connolly.
Connolly bowled 16 overs of left-arm orthodox spin, returning figures of 0-67 from his four first-class matches. He also hasn't taken any wickets in his four limited-overs games for Australia, going for 76 runs from nine overs across two ODIs and two T20s.
McSweeney, meanwhile, bowls serviceable off-spin. He has 18 wickets from 34 Shield games, including best figures of 4-89 and an average of just under 31.
It's not to say Connolly won't perform or that McSweeney is the Brad Hodge of this era or anything, but I just don't understand the way he's been treated.
