A Queensland pub, Falvey Hotel Yamanto, has made headlines by implementing a ban on clothing associated with the eshay youth subculture. The pub’s owner, Michael Falvey, released a list of clothing items that will not be allowed on the premises. This includes hooded jumpers, bum bags, Nike TN solid red shoes, and muscle t-shirts.

According to Falvey, these clothing items are often worn by a specific clientele that he does not welcome at his venue. He explained, ‘They’re just the common denominator of the people we saw causing trouble, the lad bag, Nike TNs, and the like. We couldn’t ban the mullet because here in Ipswich, there are people who’ve had the mullet since it was cool the first time.’

The eshay subculture, known for their use of pig Latin, streetwear, and certain genres of music, has gained attention in Queensland. While thongs are a fashion staple for many patrons of the pub, Michael clarified that they are allowed until 7pm. He stated, ‘They certainly can wear thongs. I know it’s caused a bit of a stir, but ideally, we don’t want you to wear thongs after 7pm. So if you have a problem, go the easy option and put on a pair of shoes.’

The announcement of the eshay ban has generated mixed reactions. Some individuals support the dress code, including Today host Karl Stefanovic. He referred to eshays as ‘a scourge on society’ and expressed his disapproval of their behavior. Stefanovic jokingly mentioned that if it were in the past, they would have been locked in Boggo Road for ten years, but acknowledged that such measures are no longer possible.

The decision by Falvey’s pub to enforce this dress code has sparked discussion and debate among the community. Whether or not people agree with the eshay ban, it is evident that the pub is taking a stance against a specific style of clothing associated with this subculture.
