Former Mongols bikie gang member Shane Bowden shot dead 'execution style'
A short time later, two vehicles, a Commodore and a Falcon, were found burnt out in Mirambeena Drive, Pimpama.
Crimes scenes were declared at the unit and where the cars were found.
“We believe the victim had come home from the gym and as he’s driven into his driveway, the assailants have run in and shot him multiple times and consequently he is now deceased," he said.
Superintendent Smith said Mr Bowden's partner and two children were upstairs during the shooting.
“[They're] obviously upset," he said.
“It’s not something you would expect to happen in your home and no one deserves to die in this manner but you live by the sword, you die by the sword."
A Twitter account in the name of Mr Bowden's former partner Trudi McPhee tweeted out: "My heart is broken RIP Shane Bowden".
Superintendent Smith said the general public had nothing to fear as it was believed the rivalry was within the Mongols bikie gang, with potentially the Finks bikie gang involved.
"There is no risk to the community but obviously it makes it harder when these types of gangs are involved because they have their own ... codes of silence," he said.
Nine News reported Queensland police feared Mr Bowden was in the state to seek revenge after he was shot in the leg during a drive-by shooting in Melbourne in July.
Superintendent Smith urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
The investigation is ongoing.
